Google enters the IM and VoIP market with Google Talk

I just downloaded and installed the beta version of Google talk and i will be testing it soon and reporting on it. Very simple design, easy to install and setup and requires a gmail account. I think a big player like google entering the VoIP market might be good news for voip users as this should bring more competition and force down call rates. You will sure hear from me again soon about Google Talk

VoIPpark, the new VoIP discussion forum

For those of us who have been lamenting the lack of a forum for VoipBuster, a reprive has finally come our way. www.voippark.com launched yesterday gives the opportunity for voipbuster, jajah, gizmo and yahoo users to share ideas and get assistance from others. This forum is also great for people like me that uses more than one apps at thesame time, they can now just visit one forum for all the apps. Check out VoIPpark and start talking to other users of your voip application or services.

Yahoo out of BETA, PC-to-phone still with Net2phone but to go fully VoIP soon.

The beta testing of yahoo pc-to-pc call is now over which means free pc-to-pc call is now an integral part of yahoo messenger but pc-to-phone still requires a net2phone subscription. Considering the high rates of netphone and the not excellent audio quality this wont make yahoo messenger compentitive in the voip market. It seems they at yahoo realised that too and indication is that they will launch full voip service as early as within the next two weeks. This is not totaly unexpected because they bought dialpad some couples of months ago. I believe that yahoo coming full into the voip market will bring more competition and consequently lower rates. Going LINUX at last !

I have been a fan of open source systems for as long as i can remember but i have also been stuck to microsoft windows for that long too. Last week i took the giant step and install the ubuntu distribution on my office computer. This is made possible by the fact that i now need linux to run some programs for my research work and the need to test VoIP applications under another operating system other than windows. I decided to install ubuntu after testing with the ubuntu live CD which i got from my good friend and colleague Mr. Asif Iqbal, who also helped me considerably with installation and still helping with solving initial problems. So far i think ubuntu is a nice distribution of linux and i am still trying to get more familiar with it. I will be making some post here in future about performance of different voip applications under the linux operating systems.

Skype version 1.3.0.60 improve call quality!

A friend of mine has been having problems with it skype audio quality due to the very restitive firewall implemented on his LAN connection and his wireless router. Together we have tried so many things but this problem persists. I read on the skypejournal some days ago about the new skype version release and i asked my friend to install it. He did and the problem was over, he now enjoy his skype like never before. Are you behind such resistive firewall or your wireless router is given your skype some problems, just try the latest skype version 1.3.0.60. Hope it will work for you like it did for my friend.
