Lots of voip applications are based on the SIP protocol. SIP protocol has now become an industry standard.
Skype
on the other hand use a proprietary protocol and has been very successful in the voip business with millions of subscribers and have a kind of cult following in the voip market. So the need always arise when you want to call from your sip based voip service or softphone to a contact on skype and vice versa. Since SIP and
Skype
dont interoperate ( i hope they will one day) you need an adapter that acts like a gateway between the two protocols so that calls can be made from one to the other. One of such adapters is the Uplink from NCH Swift Sound. Uplink connects the SIP protocol based voip calls to the proprietary
Skype
network and it works in both direction. Uplink can be
downloaded free from NCH website. Its very easy to configure and use, you will get going within minutes. After installing the uplink software just go to options to give the path to your skype executable, enter you SIP service settings and the dial options when
Skype
call sip and vice versa. If configured correctly it worked very fine and does not interface with the call quality.

How do I call call a skype contact or skypeout number with Uplink. I was able to receive skype calls but not able to dial through skype. I posted it on their forum but no one has replied for over 2 weeks now
I've been able to call in and out with Uplink. My sip phone next to my mac rings on incoming and I just and to create my own extensions for all my 'skype' buddys. So when I dial 1234, extension 1234 dials skype user 'bilbo'. For normal land line phones you need to put in the full national code, and the rest. ie. in US. 1-202-555-1212 is entered as 0012025551212. This is the cleanest, clearest solution I've seen, much cleaner than my 'cuphone' skype gateway.
Can I use this to make calls over skype using a SIP device?
