With the AIM Phoneline voip service the popular AOL Instant Messenger application has been transformed to an advanced voip application with lot of great features. The AIM Phoneline is the latest furray into the voip market by AOL. The AIM Phoneline voip application is very easy to install and configure, much thesame with AOL instant messenger. One very interesting feature about this voip service from AOL is that they are given away what others are selling, for example when you sign up for AIM Phoneline you get a free US phone line (nicknamed AIM Digits ) on which people can call you from any phone in the world. Receiving call on this number is free and unlimited. Also you get a free subscription to AIM phoneline voicemail which automatically answers your call and record audio messages when you are not available. It took me just some few minutes to download, install and setup AIM Phoneline. Both the voicemail and phone-in number worked very fine and the audio quality for both pc-to-pc and pc-to-phone calls were excellent. You can also subscribe to an interesting monthly plan for just $9.95 per month. With this monthly plan you can make unlimited free calls to landline and mobile phones in US, Canada, China, Hong Kong and Singapore. Absolutely positively DO NOT use this service for Business Purposes, as AOL suggests. I spent close to $500 in advertising costs for my business using my AOL AIM PhoneLine Number -- only to have it cancelled without reason by AOL. I thought this service would be reliable.
What was their response when I contacted them? They said that I had cancelled the service and not them. I *never* cancelled my phoneline in any way whatsoever. But whatever their "system" says, goes.
I believe their system made the error in cancelling my service, but of course, they will never admit it. Their 'Terms of Service' states that AOL can cancel your AIM Digits at any time without reason.
For a secondary fun line, this is fine. But please... do not rely on always having your phone number. I just lost business revenue because of this -- which included a 1-year Advertisement in the Yellow Pages.
Bottom Line: Okay for Fun. Too Risky for Business.
I signed up for AOL CallOut and found out that they are no longer providing phone numbers at all -- not for free or by paying. After 30 minutes of searching, I *finally* found a FAQ that explained this:
"I used to be an AIM® Phoneline member, can I get a new number or reactivate my old one?
No. The FREE AIM® Phoneline promotional time period is now over and we are no longer offering new registrations or reactivating previous ones. We are in the process of developing a replacement service called AIM Call In, which is not yet available, but keep your eye on voice.aol.com for an announcement."
I also found out that, for those who did get a free number, that if it wasn't called at least once every 30 days the number would be cancelled.
