Nikotel's Nikotalk - VoIP with 1 Click

Nikotalk is a web activated telephony service from Nikotel. It enables users to use their internet connection to initiate a call between their regular telephone and the destination telephone. Just like jajah web activated telephony service, no softphone, headset or broadband internet connection is required to use nikotalk. The distinguishing feature of nikotalk is the fact that it is not only web based but you can also download a small application that recides on your desktop. All that has to be done to make a call is to enter your telephone number and the destination's number and click the call button. Instantly your phone will ring and you will be connected to your destination phone. If you are not on your system you can use nikotalk directly from the nikotalk web page. Nikotalk is avaible for windows and Mac operating systems. Also there is mobile nikotalk for your internet enabled mobile devices. For those who like to make their calls directly from their web browser there is a nikotalk plugin for mozilla firefox. Simply you can start your phone call with nikotalk from anywhere you want. The audio quality is quite good and the rates are low. Web activated telephony has increased in popularity since the successful lauched of jajahweb and most voip applications released recently have it included one way or the other. More info about nikotalk is available at www.nikotel.com/nikotalk.html

GoogleTalk and Skype to interoperate ?

That google and skype are getting closer to a click to call ad deal has been widely reported in the blogosphere. The most interesting part to me is the fact that Lewis Lin, product marketing manager of the softphone at Google dropped a hint about possible interoperation with skype something that is unimagenable some months ago. The statement from Lin goes: Just as exciting are our plans to explore interoperability between Google Talk and Skype, making it easier for our users to chat with one another. This is just another step in our commitment to interoperability via open, industry standards. Should this happen it will be a great thing for the voip softphone industry. It will give users the ability to fully explore the full potential of their voip softphone.

Globe Dialer - VoIP Application for your Mobile Phone

Globe dialer is another voip application for your mobile phone developed by Switch-Mobile. Just like MINO it enables you to make cheap international calls directly from your mobile phone. Making international calls directly from mobile phones is very expensive in most part of the world and applications like this could help reduce this cost significantly. Most mobile voip applications works by sending voice conversations over data connection offered by most mobile network providers but Globe dialer is different it runs over the voice network itself such as GSM or CDMA. Globe dialer can be downloaded directly to your mobile phone and it acts like a secondary phonebook for all your international contacts and when you call any of your contacts on this phonebook the call is routed through Globe dialer system to your destination so that you are only making use of domestic minutes from your provider. The international part of your call is charge at globe dialer competitive rates. Lots of mobile phone brands are supported allready but if yours is not yet supported you can still use globe dialer to call up to 220 countries by calling one of their Direct Dial-In Numbers. The audio quality is good and the fact that it runs over the voice network means your provider cant turn it off, also your calls are billed by the seconds which saves you a lot of money. If you sometimes have to make international calls from your cell phone then www.globedialer.com is worth checking out.

Envox launched the Envox IVR Upgrade Program

Envox Worldwide announced that it has launched the Envox IVR Upgrade Program that will enable organizations to replace their legacy IVR systems with next-generation solutions. These new Envox-based VoIP and speech-enabled solutions can increase automation rates by 100% or more, reduce total cost of ownership by 50% or more and ensure outstanding customer interactions. “The world is filled with dead-end IVR systems that are undermining customer satisfaction and retention objectives,” said Mark D. Flanagan, president and CEO of Envox Worldwide. “These legacy IVR systems carry exorbitant maintenance fees and add unnecessary cost to an organization’s overhead. It has become apparent that these legacy IVR systems, which are based on proprietary hardware, software and interfaces, have failed both the organizations and customers that they were designed to serve.” Envox created the IVR Upgrade Program to fill a significant void in the marketplace. Competitive disruptions in the market, as well as the ongoing evolution of technology, have left many enterprises and service providers with IVR systems that have become a “dead end” rather than a pathway to the future. The Envox IVR Upgrade Program will enable any enterprise or service provider to upgrade its legacy IVR system to a next-generation voice solution customized to address their specific needs, regardless of the application, the industry, the network type, or the user interface. http://www.envox.com

Avaya Technology is used by ING Comercial America

When ING Mexico, a provider of insurance, pension benefits and financial services, needed a way to enhance at the right time, the company selected an Intelligent Communications solution from Avaya. The company established a contact center in Mexico City with 305 employees and 229 agent positions that attend to an average of 220,000 calls each month. Car accident reports, health and life insurance inquiries, pension information, and tele-sales are just some of the services provided via the contact center, in addition to services for ING employees country-wide, such as IT and HR support. To manage call routing, Avaya Customer Interaction Suite contact center software allows incoming calls to be automatically distributed based on preset parameters. As a result, callers are more quickly and efficiently connected to the agent who can best attend to their needs. For example, 80% of calls related to accidents are quickly identified and attended to in less than 10 seconds and, in the case of customer service, in less than 20 seconds. The new system provides routing and reporting tools to help better balance calls among the staff, which, in turn, can be scheduled more efficiently to match higher-volume calling times. From the Avaya MultiVantage Communications Applications portfolio, Avaya Communication Manager IP telephony software serves as the core of the new communications network at each site. Avaya Call Management System software provides reports and management tools needed to monitor and analyze contact center performance, showing where improvements are needed and where to take fast effective action. http://www.avaya.com http://www.ing.com

New Multi-Site Call Routing Software from Interactive Intelligence,

Interactive Intelligence, the global developer of business communications software, has made available a new version of its multi-site call routing software, Interaction Director, which adds generic object routing to enable distributed contact centers and enterprises to more effectively route and process virtually any type of work task — from customer service trouble tickets and loan applications to catalog orders and address updates. “The latest version of Interaction Director marks a breakthrough by extending network-based, multi-site call routing to nearly any type of work request imaginable,” said Ken Landoline, senior analyst for Yankee Group. “This unique generic object routing across sites is yet another step in the trend we’re seeing toward the increasing interest in remote agent support, the blending of internal and external workforces, and overall multi-site performance optimization.” Interaction Director was first released in 1999 as a network-based pre- and post-call routing product designed to work with the company’s contact center automation software, Customer Interaction Center(CIC). Interaction Director helps organizations improve operational efficiencies by more evenly distributing calls across sites based on real-time information, such as agent availability, skill-sets, and other pre-configured rules. This includes the ability to route faxes, e-mails, and other multimedia interactions from ACD queues across multiple sites and groups. http://www.inin.com

This portable device — which was rated a near-perfect 4.5 in Broadband Gear Report’s annual Diamond Technology Review — is said to deliver “the power and flexibility to perform all required RF and DOCSIS field testing.” It is also reportedly one of the only RF testers to use a Windows CE operating system. Hullo enters the VoIP Market with Free Calls and web activated telephony (web callback)

Hullo has launched a jajah like free voip service that enable users to call for free. At the moment its working only in North America and plan to extent to rest of the world soon. Like jajah hullo enables users to make voip calls from any phone by just entering their number and the number they want to call. As soon as they click call the two phones will be connected and they can talk. Unlike jajah which is web based allthough with firefox plugin, hullo is desktop based and also its totally free for calls to North America. PC-to-phone are also possible from hullo if you still prefer to call from your computer. Other distinguishing features of hullo are the hullo sFindMe and hullo HandOff. Hullo FindMe let you enter a series of telephone numbers which will be dialed whenever you have an incoming call so that you can pick your call or send the caller to your voicemail wherever you are. With Hullo HandsOff you jcan transfer your call to any phone on the fly which means now you can walk out of your home or office moving the call to your cell...never say “call you right back” again!. You also get a free call-in number and its possible to import your MSN Messenger and Outlook contacts directly to hullo. I have been able to test hullo and the audio quality is really good and it has features that could improve productivity if used well. But hullo should go global as soon as possible if they hope to compete with the likes of Skype, Jajah, vonage etc. Check out www.hullo.com for more information and download.

New Ethernet Switch Set from Narad can deliver up to 100 Mbps over Cable

With the likes of AT&T and Verizon aggressively rolling out new, high speed FTTH networks for the delivery of digital video, cable operators are now faced with the challenge of affordably upgrading their networks so that they can deliver next generation services with the same level of quality — or better. Narad Networks announced it has developed a new modular switch product line capable of delivering 100 Mbps simultaneously to every home on a cable operator’s network. Cable operators can use the new switch in a variety of network architectures serving both residential and business customers. For example, the switch can be deployed in a fiber to the curb architecture for high capacity residential broadband. Narad says the new Ethernet switch set will allow cable operators to upgrade their networks to deliver the same speeds or better as a FTTH network, but with less expensive electronic components and far less fiber construction, thus significantly lowering the overall cost. In fact, the company claims operators can achieve network speeds that are faster than those delivered by Verizon’s FiOS or AT&T’s Lightspeed. “In contested markets, cable operators now have a new HFC cable solution with superior performance and economics than their competitors,” said Michael Collette, chief executive officer of Narad Networks. “With this new platform, cable operators can future-proof their network to support more advanced services by delivering higher capacity at lower costs and in less time than anything offered by Verizon or AT&T.” More information available at http://www.naradnetworks.com

BroadLight partners Audicodes and Legerity to enable VoIP over PON

BroadLight, a supplier of ITU Passive Optical Network (PON) semiconductor and software, announced it is partnering with VoIP technology companies AudioCodes and Legerity (news - alert) to deliver an integrated reference platform that will allow customers to add VoIP services on GPON. The GPON VoIP reference platform is comprised of the BroadLight BL2000 Integrated BPON/GPON System-on-chip (SoC), AudioCodes’ AC48x Voice over Packet Processor family and the Legerity’s VE880 VoicePort Series telephone line interface systems. The combined system has already been adopted by XAVi Technologies, a Taiwanese broadband products supplier. JL Lin, chief technology officer of XAVi, said: “We chose to use the BroadLight and AudioCodes reference design because we needed to easily incorporate VoIP services in order to compete in major GPON contracts in review. Following our evaluation of the VoIP reference design, we believe it is a powerful and cost effective platform that will assist us in achieving design wins within the marketplace.” The joint reference design will offer PON OEMs and ODMs a hardware and software implementation of two or four VoIP channels, including full media processing (vocoders, echo cancellation, jitter buffer, etc.) and SIP signaling, supporting 3-way conferencing, call forward, call hold, call waiting and more. “We are pleased to empower BroadLight’s end-to-end GPON solution with our leading voice over packet technology,” stated AudioCodes’ Shaul Weissman, vice president of VoIP processors. “GPON is one of the most promising next generation access technologies and as a pioneer in voice technology we recognize the importance of VoIP in this space.”

Star Trek Technology brought to Earth by Eurotech

Eurotech has unveiled its space age Zypad wrist-worn computer. With an eye on revolutionizing the way millions of people work, the Zypad’s high-tech design is the compilation of circuit miniaturization, a wide range of computer hardware functions, optimized power consumption, and ergonomic considerations. Indeed, weighing only about 10 ounces, the device could conceivably function as a common everyday tool, not unlike a mobile phone. “The idea behind the wrist-worn computer project,” explains Eurotech President Roberto Siagri, “is to leave the user’s hands free. The Zypad enables users to work with a network connection without being tied to a fixed position. These wearable computers will give us a new freedom of movement, radically changing the way we work, and for the better.” While the primary target market for the wrist-PC will be demanding — perhaps hostile — environments where computers have become essential, yet the use of traditional PCs or other handheld devices is still impractical. In these instances, wearable computers will provide a means of access to integrated network resources without unnecessarily inconveniencing users. The flexibility of the miniature device is noteworthy, as it adds to the range of possible uses. Largely, the controls are dependent on users’ requirements and the intended application of the device. Both touch screens and navigation keys can be used, and voice recognition software is in the process of being developed for the Zypad. Really, the uses are nearly limitless, once the functionality of a full-size PC is places in a small, wireless, wrist-sized device, in environments where hands-free and always-on connectivity are particularly important.

NETGEAR’s Powerline HD Ethernet Adapters turn any AC electrical outlet into an HD-streaming, high-speed Ethernet broadband connection for real-time high-quality video, gaming, and VoIP. The adapter offers built-in Video Quality of Service (VQoS) for consistent performance with encrypted security, at unprecedented data rates, to seamlessly stream HD video throughout the entire home. “We’ve seen great demand for this technology, as its simplicity is unbeatable,” stated Kartik Gada, NETGEAR’s product line manager for connectivity devices. “Consumers are requiring faster, more reliable, convenient, and uncomplicated broadband connections throughout their homes, in order to support a growing number of applications, like online gaming, audio distribution, and HD video streaming, all of which require copious bandwidth. By working with DS2, we’ve developed the ideal solution for successfully bridging the gap in areas of the home network that aren’t conducive to wireless, without requiring a clutter of cords.” DS2 200 Mbps technology also supports advanced features, like QoS management, multicasting, and network isolation, making it the ideal application not just for in-home consumer electronics, but also metropolitan wide area networking. Per second billing and Missed call Callback- Two interesting features of Webacall VoIP Service

Webacall VoIP service is like any other voip service providers excepts for two unique features which are per second billing and Missed call callback. Webacall bills the subscribers per second which could mean significant cost savings when compared to billing per minute which is what most providers do. The fact that webacall rates are as low as that of skype or in some cases even lower on a per minute basis makes it worth checking out. The second feature Missed call callback is even more interesting and unique to webacall. Missed call callback also referred to as ANI callback enable webacall subribers to use their account from any telephone in the world. All they have to do is to logon and register their telephone number against their userid. Once their number is registered they can call webacall access number from their regular phone and they will get a busy tone which means they will not be charged for that call but webacall system will recognise the number they called from, authorise the number against their account and call them back!. They can then enter the number they want to call and be connected immediatelly. Its also possible to register more than one number so you can use your account from your home, work or mobile phone. Like most service providers webacall also offer PC-to-phone, device-to-phone, web callback, sms callback and wap callback. Check out www.webacall.com for more information about their service.

No more credit expiration for voipbuster!

Betamax GmbH has decided to drop the 120 days credit expiration it previously imposed on credit purchase for use on voipbuster but instead give 120 freedays which means the free destinations will only remain free for 120 days and afterwards you have to pay for those destinations mostly just 1 cent per minute. So instead of your credit expiring they just make you spend it. The stament on voipbuster website reads: "We decided to drop the expiry dates for credit. That means your credit will stay valid for ever!.If you buy credit, you will get 120 FREEDAYS (unless stated otherwise). This means you can call all countries in the free destinations list for 120 days at no costs. When the 120 days are over, you will keep your credit, and a minimal rate will be charged, this rate depends on the country check our rates list. AND IT GETS EVEN BETTER.. if you top up your account before your Freedays are over, we will ADD (instead of overwrite) your Freedays (up to a 365 days maximum) for example if you have 40 days left and you topup, you will get 160 Freedays."

No more free destinations on Poivy

Betamax GmbH the company behind poivy has decided to remove free destinations from poivy. They now only offer free trial calls to landlines in Austria, Czech Rep, Germany, Switzerland and United Kingdom. All previously free destinations now cost 1 cents per minute. This is a return to when poivy was originally launched with no free destinations and the cheapest call rate being 1.5 cents per min. This might be a signal that Betamax GmbH which have followed the footsteps of previous owner Finarea is about to launch another voip application with lots of free destinations and forced users of poivy to switch and buy another 10 euros minimum credit. It could also mean that the era of free calls with Betamax GmbH voip applications is coming to an end and the recent increase of connection fee for their direct callback service from 3 cents to 5 cents points in this direction. 1 cent per minute for calls to popular destinations is still the cheapest in the market but most people simply dont like the unethical business model of Betamax and previously Finarea.

VoiceOne(TM) and VariTalk Team Up to Send 'Snakes on a Plane' Personalized Phone Messages from Samuel L. Jackson

VariTalk, LLC and VoiceOne(TM) Communications, LLC, a subsidiary of VoIP, Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: VOII), announced today they have begun working together on what many would say is the most successful Internet and mobile marketing campaign ever for Time Warner-owned New Line Cinema's, #1 box office movie "Snakes on A Plane." The campaign empowers movie fans to create and send personalized phone and E-mail messages in the voice of Samuel L. Jackson. The official film site is online at http://www.snakesonaplane.com. Unlike most voice service applications, VariTalk's super-personalized marketing campaigns are on-demand arrangements - with people reacting to promotions, television and radio commercials, and especially word of mouth. "VoiceOne's proprietary software platform meets the demand with scalability that most hardware-dependent providers cannot match without significant lead time. And VoiceOne's proven technology meets an additional requirement: bullet-proof reliability," explained VariTalk's former CTO and newly named Chief Executive Officer Frederick Lowe. "When Snakes on A Plane took off, VariTalk was faced with a challenge: record call volume. VoiceOne stepped in quickly and seamlessly, enabling the Company to make immediate improvements in capacity and reliability." "We are pleased to have come together with VoiceOne. With effectively infinite scalability and 100% delivery success we're sure to rely on them for many future campaigns of this type," Lowe said. VoiceOne's Chief Technology Officer Shawn Lewis commented, "We are thrilled to be working with VariTalk on creative and successful marketing campaigns like this one. Our technology is scalable, flexible and reliable, so companies like VariTalk, who are on the leading edge of providing new ways to market products and services, can know their campaigns are going to work well technically."

WebPhone

I have been trying out this nice voip softphone WebPhone for some time and its been working really great. The audio quality is really good and the call rates are very reasonable too. There are two categories of webphone voip service which are webphone basic and webphone plus. With webphone basic you can make free webphone to webphone calls and call regular phones at rates starting from 1.9 cents. One interesting feature of webphone is the calling card feature which enable webphone users to use their webphone account from any phone and for just 1.49 dollars per month you can add this feature to your webphone account. With webphone plus you get all the features of webphone basic with unlimited incoming calls, a US number with a area code of your choice, call forwarding, call waiting, voicemail and call blocking all for just 5 dollars per month. Visit www.webphone.com for more details and download.

Google upgrades Google Talk

That Google is not doing really great in the VoIP arena is still a misery to many followers of voip technology. Since its launch, google talk has not live up to the expectations. Not a few expected google talk to sweep the voip world like a wild storm and drag skype to the background but those never happened. But it seems google has not given up on voip and still trying to win users to google talk. The latest version of google talk is testimony to the fact that google still want to capture the voip and instant messaging world like they did for the search engine world. Theis latest version is an improvement over the last version with features such as fast file sharing, sending and receiving voicemail for free and the users ability to show the music they are listening to in their status information. Google says this is a responce to feedback from users of google talk. These features are not new in voip applications any more but i believe it will nevertheless encourage people to have a look at google talk. Only the future will tell if google will be able to catch up with the likes of Skype, yahoo., Jajah etc in the voip business.

Norlight Announces Its "Ip For All" Revolution

Norlight Telecommunications, Inc., a facilities-based communications company headquartered in Brookfield, Wisconsin, with over 30 years experience providing Internet Protocol and enhanced services and network services to commercial and wholesale customers in the upper Midwest, today announced plans to offer businesses integrated communications bundles that combine local voice, long distance, Internet services and enhanced data services over a private Internet Protocol(IP)connection. The same private IP network will deliver Norlight's hosted IP telephony services and enable managed premise-based IP solutions targeted at small and medium-sized businesses. Norlight's newest integrated communications offering, called IPLiveR, will be available this fall to Madison- and Green Bay-based businesses, with future market deployment planned for Norlight's other Midwestern markets. The integrated communications bundles delivered by a private IP network are specifically designed to help small and medium-sized businesses by providing them with the same kinds of timesaving calling features, enhanced services and money-saving economies typically enjoyed by big businesses that have been the early adopters of Voice-over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology. In addition to local voice, long distance and Internet services, Norlight's three IPLive bundles include caller ID and direct inward dial, and deliver enhanced data services free of charge, such as email with spam blocking and virus protection, Web site and file hosting, Web and voice conferencing capabilities, remote VPN connections, and managed firewall protection. An Advanced Features Package and a variety of a la carte services are also available, allowing businesses to tailor an IPLive bundle to their unique needs. According to a study by Sage Research, 60 percent of surveyed decision makers cited productivity savings as a motive for IP telephony deployment, along with another 75 percent citing cost savings. "We believe that every business can benefit from the ease of management and greater cost efficiencies delivered by Norlight's IP telephony solutions," said Tom Szews, Norlight's IP telephony and local service category manager. "With an array of IP telephony solutions tailored to fit businesses of all sizes, rather than older technology, one-size-fits-all services offered by many of our competitors, Norlight thinks it's time for an 'IP for All' revolution." Norlight is touting its IP for All movement via radio and direct mail to Wisconsin businesses. "We believe it's important for small to medium-sized business owners, in particular, to know there are affordable VoIP solutions that can provide productivity gains and help them grow their business. And that's what Norlight's IP for All revolution is about," explained KrisPalen, Norlight's director of marketing communications. "The productivity-enhancing features available from IPLive are now truly available to businesses of all sizes, not just larger enterprises." Norlight's IPLive service is designed to extend the life of a customer's existing phone equipment and provides at least a full T-1 of broadband Internet bandwidth, which is double that typically offered by traditional (non-IP) service packages using older technology. "Customers will enjoy greater data bandwidth using dynamic allocation. This allows customers to maximize the use of data traffic, while ensuring quality of service for voice calls. Dynamic bandwidth allocation is not possible when services are delivered via non-IP networks, as is the case with many of our competitors", said Kamlesh Sethi, Norlight's product manager for IP telephony and local services. In addition to its suite of IP telephony solutions, Norlight's services include managed network security, business continuance solutions, audio and Web conferencing services, and traditional voice, Internet and data transport services.

Gizmo Project and LiveJournal team up.

SIPphone, Inc., developers of the free Gizmo Project Internet calling and IM software, and Six Apart, Ltd., the world leader in blogging software and services, today announced a partnership introducing to Six Apart's LiveJournal users a preferred voice and instant messaging client optimized for use with LJ Talk, LiveJournal's just-announced instant messaging and voice service. The co-branded "Gizmo Project for LJ Talk" software will enable LiveJournal friends to call each other for free, send instant messages and see each other's online presence (available, away or offline). LiveJournal is one of the web's largest online communities, organized around personal journals, social networks and interest-based groups.
Using the free Gizmo Project for LJ Talk voice and IM software, LiveJournal users will be able to make calls and instant message contacts from their LiveJournal Friends list, making it easier to stay in contact. Their existing Friends list will be automatically available to users when they log in to the software using standard LiveJournal account information, and new contacts can be added easily. All calls between LiveJournal users using the software will be free and LiveJournal users will be able to take advantage of the same promotional calling plans that regular Gizmo Project users enjoy.
"We're pleased to be working with Six Apart and LiveJournal, which will be the first major online community to extend real-time communication features like voice and IM to every one of its millions of members," said Jason Droege, President of SIPphone. "Because these features are based on the robust open standards of SIP and Jabber, LiveJournal users will always be able to communicate with the largest number of people around the world, including LiveJournal friends, other Gizmo Project users, or people that might be using other private-label Gizmo Project versions," Droege concluded.
LiveJournal users who use Gizmo Project for LJ Talk can easily access the following key features:
* High-quality free voice calls to people using Gizmo Project for LJ Talk as well as any other versions of Gizmo Project
* Instant messaging between LiveJournal friends, other Gizmo Project users, Google Talk users, or people using any other Jabber-based IM network worldwide. Allows users and their friends to have real-time written communications that can later be incorporated into journals
* Presence detection which allows users to see who is online
* Ultra low-cost calls to landline or mobile phones around the world
* Free conference calls among friends, which can be scheduled and moderated by Gizmo Project for LJ Talk users
* Free "Call me" and "IM" buttons on journal pages to initiate calls and instant messages from the web
* Point and click "voice posts", which allows Gizmo Project for LJ Talk users worldwide to easily post audio recordings (podcasts) on their Livejournal pages
* Real-time maps of caller locations, and more
Gizmo Project for LJ Talk is an outgrowth of Gizmo Project's new partner program designed to create and distribute custom-branded voice and IM software, or "softphones." The software delivers free VoIP calls, instant messaging and dozens of other advanced features, and can be used to reinforce a partners' own brand with a frequently-used product. Customization services are provided by SIPphone and projects from start-to-finish can be completed in about a month. Localized versions are available and co-branding of web content associated with the softphone and service can further improve the experience.
The free Gizmo Project for LJ Talk software for Windows, Macintosh and Linux lets users make crystal-clear free calls using the Internet and is expected to be available for free from the LiveJournal site in August. As easy to use as an Instant Messenger, Gizmo Project for LJ Talk also offers such features as free voicemail, free conference calling, complete call history, instant messaging, and free calling to millions of people on SIP-based networks, the most popular open standard protocol for VoIP communications.

VoIP enhances Home based Call Centers

Sure, voice over IP technology could help U.S. corporations move even more of their customer contact centers overseas than they have already. After all, VoIP, like the Internet itself, makes a user's physical location irrelevant. But the same technology can also help those same businesses keep more of that work at home. The reason: it'll let them extend the full capabilities of their contact centers to domestic workers who can't, or won't, commute to physically centralized facilities — not for $13 or $14 an hour. The change could come fairly quickly. A new Yankee Group report finds that 47 percent of agent seats in U.S. contact centers will have VoIP capability by the end of 2007. That's up from a mere 17 percent last year. The numbers are even higher with the real contact center pros, the ones that provide outsourced services to enterprises that don't want to do it themselves. In that group, 50 percent are already using VoIP, and 75 percent will in another 12 months, according to senior analyst Ken Landoline, author of the report. The report is the result of interviews with 351 "contact center decision makers." Transporting the voice call to the agent over IP links is actually the least important aspect of the advance. VoIP-based contact centers — the updated term, to reflect their broader capabilities, for what used to be called call centers — can work just as well, or perhaps even better, if the calls travel through a gateway and over the PSTN to agents, particularly if the agents are working remotely. What's more important is that the calls travel as IP packets through the heart of the system. That lets enterprises transform their contact centers from physical to virtual operations, in which agents can perform exactly the same functions no matter where they are located. "There is still a shadow of doubt about VoIP's quality of service," notes Landoline. "The real advantage of the VoIP application is the ability to use the unified application distributed throughout the enterprise." A VoIP system also gives those agents a lot more — and a lot more powerful — capabilities than they would have in traditional call centers using automated call distribution (ACD) equipment. The capabilities, based on IP-based features the older systems couldn't provide, are familiar. Presence awareness is one. Agents often receive calls they are not equipped to deal with, and need to bring in someone better qualified. "In a new VoIP system, they can look on screen at a buddy list and see who's available for the call, and just click on it," explains Landoline. "In the old days they would have had to call ahead to find out who is available, and then bridge in the call." VoIP also brings contact centers the usual benefits like unified voice mail, e-mail and fax capabilities, accessible through on-screen interfaces. And it allows managers to see, and gather data about, the status and performance of virtually any agent working for them anywhere, as easily as if they were all in the same building. It's that "agents anywhere" capability, as Landline puts it, that has companies excited. "More and more, people want to connect remote agents working from home, so that they can tap into some of the labor pools they haven't been able to use effectively in the past," he explains. "All they would need is a high-speed Internet connection and a telephone and a browser. You literally can work from your kitchen table on your laptop." A recent development will make it even easier for U.S. corporations to use domestic call agents. On August 18, Sprint Nextel began offering hosted contact center services, providing IP-based network and data center infrastructure. The service will allow enterprises to run VoIP call centers using their own agents, without having to shell out for equipment or facilities. The service, which runs on an Avaya platform, targets a variety of enterprises and needs, according to Susan Winter, product marketing manager. These include organizations whose customer contact needs vary by season or day of week. They could be financial services companies, particularly those with tax-related activities; companies with internal benefit enrollment deadlines; government agencies with weekly or monthly registration deadlines; and travel-related businesses. Companies just getting started are also potential customers. But Winter, too, sees the service's VoIP component as playing into the larger picture. "An industry trend is that there are going to be a lot more remote agents, with companies utilizing more domestic resources," she says. Being able to tap local workers without having to build a brick-and-mortar site is a significant advantage, she claims. The flexibility that remote work offers makes it easier to is get and retain high-quality agents, she adds. All of this could put a major damper on what seems almost a knee-jerk impulse among U.S. corporations to send customer contact work overseas. It's not just that it'll increase the pool of agents, by making available those who for one reason or another can't commute to centralized facilities. It's also that those agents can be in places like Idaho rather than India. That will help alleviate issues like "correcting" accents and overcoming cultural differences. It'll also change the cost equation. No longer will the choice be between equal-sized buildings in the U.S. and overseas. It'll be, rather, between smaller facilities in the U.S., with a lot of remote workers, and larger facilities overseas, where few workers are set up to work at home. That's important because even in developing countries, modern office buildings with state-of-the-art communications systems can be expensive. The impact on highly English-literate countries like India and the Philippines could be significant. Both have taken advantage of advanced telecom technology to transform themselves into major customer-contact outsourcing destinations. In a way, of course, it's just a new twist on an old story: what technology gives, technology can take away. The only difference now is how far it takes it, and how fast.

Minacom says quality of VoIP phone calls increasing

VoIP phone services worldwide sound better than the standard public-switched phone network, according to research from Minacom. But, these findings do not apply to PC-to-PC VoIP calling, like Skype, for a variety of issues. The company's data from the last 12 months showed that the quality of VoIP services offered by broadband VoIP providers, cable operators, and telecos has increased , with an average Mean Opinion Score of 4.2, compared to 3.9 for the PSTN. Minacom said, “Based on a MOS threshold of 3.6, only one out of 50 calls in North America were considered to be unacceptable – one in 10 worldwide – while greater than 85 percent of VoIP calls exceeded average PSTN quality of the same period.” Additionally, VoIP phone calls were found to connect quicker overall, 8.2 seconds on average compared to 8.7 seconds on a PSTN. Minacom's findings did not apply to PC-to-PC VoIP services, like Skype. The study comes as Brix Networks recently indicated that 1 in 5 Internet phone calls were classified as unacceptable, and that call quality was declining. “Minacom felt is should be clarified for both those in the VoIP industry, and individuals and enterprises considering VoIP service, that (Brix's) report evaluated computer-to-computer Internet phone service, similar to those offered by Skype, Google Talk, MSN and Yahoo Messenger,” The company said in a written statement. “The quality and service reliability of these applications does not compare to that of the VoIP phone services offered by telecos, cable operators, and broadband VoIP providers who carefully deploy, monitor and manage the the quality of their services.” “PC-PC VoIP quality is subject to many diverse impairments, including firewall settings, computer performance, antivirus installations, high-compression codecs, and Internet bandwidth shared with gaming, file downloads, Web surfing, and e-mail. By contrast, VoIP offered by service providers is switched using telecom-grade equipment, uses lower-compression codecs, and is prioritized over regular Internet traffic using sophisticated, standards-based multimedia telephone adapters maintained and monitored by the operator.” VoIP call quality is a very important and sometimes frustrating thing. A report by Telephia showed that more than 27 percent of VoIP subscribers who are likely to change providers do so because of network quality. Adding credence to Minacom's report, J.D. Powers & Associates had their own report which found cable TV providers who offer telephone service ranked higher than traditional phone companies in customer satisfaction.

Google's eBay VoIP Deal

It was the talk of the telecom industry. Early last year, someone noticed that Google had posted a job ad for an expert who could, among other things, negotiate contracts for "dark fiber" — that is, optical fiber that is installed but not yet in use — in metropolitan areas and over long distances. For the credulous, only one conclusion was possible: Google had "dropped a hint" that it wanted to become a "global telecom powerhouse," replete with massive international infrastructure. The disclosure set off a storm of speculation about how the search giant could compete with and crush just about anyone in the telecom business, in fields ranging from VoIP to Internet access to cellular services. In August of last year, Google obligingly introduced Google Talk, a PC-to-PC VoIP service attached to its instant messaging client. Telecom carriers taking all the talk seriously had to be terrified, especially if they were already worried about VoIP in general. Last week, Google dropped a quite a different hint, in the form of a click-to-call ad deal with eBay. Yes, the deal showed it is getting more serious about VoIP, at least. But from the evidence, it won't soon be going after the AT&T's and Verizons of the world, or even the Vonages. It'll be using VoIP, rather, as a way to — surprise — help sell Web ads. (News "analyses," meanwhile, eventually reported that Google was believed to be, according to an abundance of rumors, "going dark" on its never-announced, never-verified plans to build a global fiber backbone rivaling those of major network operators.) The new deal will make Google the exclusive supplier of text-based ads on eBay sites outside the U.S. More important from a VoIP perspective, it calls for Google and eBay to incorporate click-to-call capabilities into their ads on one another's sites. This will allow users to make VoIP calls to participating eBay merchants or Google advertisers via either eBay's Skype or Google's Google Talk soft-phone clients and headsets, by simply clicking on the ads. But it won't convince them to throw away their home phones. "I don't think [the deal is] that much about VoIP," says David Lemelin, an In-Stat analyst. "I think it is about two companies that are probably in the best position to test the waters on customers' willingness to click and advertisers' willingness to pay for those clicks, and to really understand the dynamics of whether it's going to be worth an advertiser paying for a click to call or not." In fact, the announcement said more about Google's lack of interest in competing with telcos or their VoIP rivals for the mainstream voice market, than about its interest in doing so. That lack of interest becomes particularly evident in light of its previous lukewarm efforts. Unlike AOL with its AIM Phoneline, Microsoft with its Windows Live and Yahoo with its Yahoo Messenger, Google offers no outbound service to connect calls to the PSTN. And although working through Skype could offer that capability, the announcement only says the companies will "explore interoperability" between Skype and Google Talk — a tepid endorsement of the idea, at best. The search leader has left itself at least one opening. Since Google Talk is based on the open XMPP protocol, developers can create their own gateways to the PSTN and offer dial-in or dial-out services. Still, trying to use VoIP to replace or displace conventional phone service makes little sense for big portals like Google, according to Yankee Group analyst Jennifer Simpson, author of a recent report on Web voice services. That's because the real value of Web voice applications lies in what they can offer that conventional telephony can't. "Increasingly, we're seeing contextually based applications," Simpson says. "Users who might be looking at content or doing online gaming, or in this case are shopping online, are given the ability through the VoIP client to call friends or other users or a retail facility, and comment or ask questions. This is very different from our traditional use of the telephone line." The key difference is that the VoIP calls users make as a part of a broader Web interaction are often calls they wouldn't have otherwise made. In some cases, they might not have known that the other users or sellers were there, because they wouldn't have learned of them through chat rooms, context-based ads or presence detection, for example. In other cases, they might have known they were there, but would have felt more hesitant about picking up the phone and making a conventional call than about clicking on an icon as part of a Web interaction. "When you look at social networking or gaming, I don't think most gamers would think of calling each other on the phone while gaming," explains Simpson. "But if they can click a button and talk to one another through a VoIP connection while gaming, then that makes sense." Either way, it's evident that Web-based voice services of the sort Google and other portals are beginning to emphasize are attractive not because they are voice, but because they are Web-based, and part of larger sets of interconnected services and applications. The lesson is clear: Web portals will play an increasingly important role in creating the new kinds of socially interactive services that will in the future come to define telecommunications. And telecom carriers should worry less about portal operators' ability to move in on their shrinking traditional telephony territory than about their own inability to move in on the portals' rich, ever-expanding territory. Infonetics Research says Service Providers see VoIP as a Money Maker

A new study by Infonetics Research said more and more service providers are looking at VoIP to beef up their revenue generation as traditional phone service income has fallen. The study, “Service Provider Plans for Next Gen Voice & IMS,” was put together after formal interviews with 24 service providers from North America, Europe, Asia Pacific and Central America, and informal discussions with other service providers. “No longer is VoIP being offered only by specialist providers and VoIP pioneers, but by all types of providers in all regions of the world,” said Stephane Teral, principal analyst at Infonetics for service provider VoIP, IMS, and FMC. “Next gen voice services have elevated from lab curiosity to market reality.” Of those interviewed, 83 percent said the main driver for those adopting VoIP is the availability of new applications and services. The next two reasons, the service providers said, were for savings on operational and capital expenditures. But the main barrier right now is equipment interoperability. “This will not be an overnight process; replacing installed legacy gear in high teledensity areas like North America and Western Europe will take at least 10 to 15 years,” said Teral. “In these areas, many carriers are letting their legacy equipment slowly churn while using VoIP now as an augmentation or an alternative, or when more capacity or expansion to a new location is needed. Meanwhile, new entrants to the VoIP market and incumbents in regions like Eastern Europe and South East Asia that are bringing teledensity up to average levels are deploying next gen voice as their primary platform.” According to the study, service providers expect incoming and outgoing VoIP traffic to nearly double over the next year, with long distance traffic growing the fastest. Infonetics also said SIP is becoming the leading protocol for communication between softwitch/voice application servers and media servers, and it is expected to reach 100 percent penetration among respondents by 2007. Infonetics' report is just the latest in a flurry of indicators that VoIP is at the point of no return: Telephia reports that there are at least 2.9 million pure-play VoIP subscribers , the VoIP service revenue market is expected to hit $13.3 billion in 2009 , and there are even VoIP pay phones in Australia.

New Phone Sound Quality Technology and New Phones from Polycom

Polycom has announced Polycom HD Voice, its new audio technology for telephones that provides dramatic improvements in audio quality to ordinary business desktop phone systems. Polycom HD Voice solutions are built using advanced technologies that Polycom has developed using more than 15 years in voice communications experience. These include wideband audio, enhanced signal processing, Acoustic Clarity Technology™ 2 (including next generation technologies for transparent full duplex, echo cancellation, dynamic noise reduction, automatic gain control and microphone management) and specialized system design to deliver unrivaled clarity and richness. VoIP News was given an advanced demonstration of the technology in the new desk phones that Polycom also announced at the Fall VON show. These phones, the SoundPoint IP 650, are a mid-range business desktop IP phone in terns of price but deliver room filling sound that is equal to or superior to that of a top-of-the-line conference phone. “The telephone remains the most critical communication tool in business, yet studies show that two-thirds of the frequencies in which the human ear is most sensitive, and 80 percent of the frequencies in which speech occurs, are beyond the capabilities of the public telephone network,” said Jeffrey Rodman. “People are accustomed to mediocre phone call quality because there hasn’t been an alternative – until now. VoIP gives us a new network dynamic to deliver a broader spectrum for voice communication and dramatically improve the user experience. Polycom HD Voice smashes the quality barrier of traditional telephony by leveraging broader frequencies and incorporating leading technology developed in Polycom’s labs.” Rodman also explained to VoIP News that Polycom expanded the frequency response range of these phones both in the upper registers, which is similar to other high-quality voice solutions, but also in the lower ranges which is not. Typically the lower ranges are thought to simply increase background noise without necessarily enhancing voice. But Polycom has done research to show that a careful expansion in the lower registers can dramatically improve the quality of voice reproduction without significantly increasing background noise. “Polycom HD Voice represents the next wave in VoIP, showing customers that VoIP communications quality can be vastly superior to that of traditional phones,” said Will Stofega, research manager, VoIP Services at IDC. “We have seen how VoIP offers greater flexibility, expanded integration options and long-term cost saving opportunities. Now we are beginning to see how the voice quality and user experience can be much better than we are accustomed to, and there will be no looking back.” “Polycom HD Voice sets a new standard for voice quality by leveraging our proven, market-leading technologies. Customers want to communicate more efficiently and Polycom HD Voice is like going from AM radio to CD quality, providing enhanced clarity in communications and collaboration, and ultimately improved productivity. Polycom HD Voice is the third element in our UltimateHD strategy, which also includes currently shipping HD video bridges and an HD video conference recording and streaming server. Verizon Business IP Web Center

Verizon, a traditional carrier, expanding into providing advanced call center applications, is more proof that carriers are moving beyond simply providing “dumb voice” circuits. Verizon’s IP Web Center is a network-based IP Contact Center offer ing that supports inbound/outbound telephony, Web call back, scheduled call back, Web chat, collaboration, e-mail, and fax. Verizon Business married its Voice over IP service to its Contact Center service expertise to deliver one of the industry’s first end-to-end contact center solutions. By combining the power of Verizon Web Center with the Verizon Voice over IP suite of services, businesses can reap the benefits of VoIP across their entire enterprise operations and achieve new capabilities and cost savings afforded by IP telephony. Some powerful features include unified messaging, ACD/IVR, quality monitoring, intelligence contact routing (across multiple media types), ability to create guest supervisors, pre-announced caller information (whisper announcements), enhanced statistical information, and remote agent capabilities. Verizon Web Center and Verizon Voice over IP now share the same network infrastructure and customer premises equipment so Verizon Business can activate a wide range of IP telephony services, including IP Web Center, Hosted IP Centrex, IP Integrated Access, IP Flexible T-1 and IP Trunking, at a given company location. IP Web Center is well suited for midsized businesses that want to expand the feature set of their existing contact centers. Since IP Web Center is a hosted solution that simply requires a phone and a broadband connection, large companies can also use the service for agents to make and receive calls any where in the United States, thus reducing the need to expand hardwired contact center facilities. It’s worth mention ing that companies are increasingly moving to the IP contact center, taking advantage of an IP network environment to become more flexible and realize infrastructure cost savings.Verizon Business’s newly expanded pricing options let customers pay as they go for IP-enabled Web Center services. Businesses only pay a monthly per agent price, plus call transport fees and associated IP phone equipment costs. This works well for companies that need to increase agent levels during busy holiday times and then reduce them when normal call levels resume.

Sangoma Technologies's A200 FXO/FXS Analog Telephone Support System

We have tested Sangoma’s cards firsthand, so we know how versatile and innovative these cards are. Sangoma is well known for architecting their telephony hardware to support several softpbxs, including the popular Asterisk platform, Yate, OPAL PBX/IVR projects, as well as other Open Source and proprietary PBX/Switch/IVR/VoIP gateway applications. Sangoma’s A200 and Sangoma’s REMORA system together comprise the FXO/FXS version of the company’s Advanced Flexible Telecommunications (AFT) hardware designed for optimum support of analog voice traffic. The A200 series provides analog connections for FXO or FXS in expandable solutions from two ports to 24 ports. One of the most unique aspects of all of Sangoma’s products is that they are easily expandable to go from two ports to 24 ports utilizing the existing card and adding modules. This type of flexibility and field upgradeability has never been seen in this space before. Another innovative feature that Sangoma introduced in many of their products, including the A200, is a telco grade hardware echo canceller of 128ms. The A200 solution supports any combination of up to 24 FXO or FXS connec tions. A single PCI slot host connection for all ports ensures common synchronous clocking for all channels. The base AFT architecture is shared with Sangoma’s A101, A201, A104, and soon to be released A108 cards, ensuring common 3.3V/5V, high performance PCI compatibility. Just as with all Sangoma’s cards, the A200 has field upgradeable firmware to take advantage of hardware nd software improvements as they become available. The A200 consists of a REMORA daughterboard mounted on the AFT PCI card. The REMORA card has two sockets, each of which can accept a FXO-2 or FXS-2 module. Each FXO-2 or FXS-2 module supports two FXO or FXS ports respectively. Up to five additional REMORA daughterboards can be mounted in empty slot positions beside the A200 assembly connected to the A200 by a backplane bus connector. Importantly, the A200 fits into the 2U Form factor and short 2U compatible mounting clips are available for installation in 2U rackmount servers. It also features a 32-bit bus master DMA data exchanges across PCI interface at 132Mbytes/sec for minimum host processor intervention. Finally, it is fully PCI 2.2 compliant, making it com patible with all commercially available motherboards, and it performs proper interrupt sharing — something that often plagues other telephony hardware.

RADCOM's R70 Probe

As enhanced applications converge onto IP networks and as service providers look to deploy Triple and Quadruple Play services, the ability to diagnose and troubleshoot network issues becomes even more critical and more complex. Fortunately, RADCOM’s R70 provides what you could consider a “triple play packet sniffer.” The Linux based, intrusive and non-intrusive R70 probes monitor and analyze network traffic. The R70 probes are a high-end, upgradeable component of RADCOM’s Omni-Q, a network and service monitoring, analysis and troubleshooting system for public IP, cable, and advanced cellular networks. R70 probes give operators total visibility into the session and application levels, with full seven-layer analysis. They provide operators with a comprehensive and correlated view of all IP based services, including VoIP and IPTV, complete with service integrity metrics from their subscriber’s perspective. The R70 is the first probe in the market to process data at 10 Gbps. The R70 leverages the company’s existing, proprietary technology (the Gear Chip) to achieve its high level of performance that exceeds the processing limitations of most of not all other existing probes in the market. It is a unique monitoring and analysis tool that, in a single product, addresses the needs of ILECs, MSOs, and cellular operators. Service providers moving to an all-IP core network architecture will find that RADCOM’s R70 offers a comprehensive feature set to monitor and analyze their networks. Because it gives operators complete visibility in the IP-based service running over the network, it enables early stage fault detection, pre-emptive main tenance and optimization. Additionally, when operators seek to introduce new services to create new revenue streams, RADCOM’s R70 probe-based monitoring system reveals subscriber behavior providing valuable insight into the new service adoption process.

Paragon Wireless Inc's PWTW-1100

The ability to seamlessly make and receive phone calls on both cellular and WiFi networks is not a dream for tomorrow — it’s happening today with companies like Paragon Wireless leading the way. The Paragon Wireless PWTW-1100 is the first com mercialized SIP-based, voice optimized, dual mode (GSM/WiFi-VoIP) handset in the world. In fact, they started shipments in China in March 2006. Paragon Wireless has developed a patent pending technology that allows an optimal integration of two wireless radios (cellular and WiFi) in such a way that problems like power management, roaming, FMC, Mobile VOIP and security (WPA supported) are solved. It can automatically roam between radio networks in less than 50ms. Paragon has created the first commercialized product in its segment and the technology solution of integrating WiFi and VoIP with cellular radio in a way that also allows great performance. Paragon claims that independent tests have been conducted by China Telecom testing standby and talk times of their dual mode phone to confirm its good performance. The handset sports four hour talk and 72 hours standby time, even when both its WiFi and GSM capabilities are running. It has strong VoIP support with acoustic echo cancellation, and a suite of codecs that includes G.711, G.723, AMR, and LPC, as well as a dynamic jitter buffer and a voice activity detector. Occam Network's BLC 6314 10GigE Transport and Optical Line Termination (OLT) Blade

Occam’s razor has always been associated with the concept of simplicity. For instance, Occam’s razor postulates that the answers to most scientific phenomenon are usually the simplest rather than the more complex. Well, Occam Networks aims to provide the simplest solution to the complexity of bandwidth hungry applications running on a service provider’s network. Occam’s newest blade for its flagship BLC 6000, the BLC 6314 10GigE Transport and optical Line Termination (OLT) blade, adds a whopping dual 10 Gigabit Optical Ethernet and multiple 1 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces to the BLC 6000 in a single, environmentally hardened blade. The Occam BLC 6314 claims to be the first and only product that delivers this level of bandwidth with a sub-50-millisecond failover rate. This enables telcos to create highly resilient access networks that can deliver a TV signal with “five nines”of reliability. The BLC provides an abundance of symmetrical bandwidth that enables telcos to easily create very high capacity access networks with 10 Gigabit Ethernet redundant transport rings at a fraction of the cost of traditional SONETbased OC 192. The BLC 6314 can be used for fiber to the home (FTTH) optical line termination. When combined with the Occam BLC 6312 blade, the BLC 6314 creates a high-capacity FTTP Optical Line Termination system with integrated 10 Gigabit Ethernet transport that can serve more than 250 subscribers with up to one Gigabit of full duplex bandwidth each. Having this kind of mega-bandwidth makes broadband cable and DSL look like dial-up! Also, the BLC 6314 can also be used for higher capacity access network aggregation using the company’s Ethernet Protection Switching (EPS). It provides resilient 10 Gigabit Ethernet aggregation rings for BLC 6000-based copper and fiber access networks. As bandwidth-intensive applications, such as HDTV, IPTV, VoIP VoD, P2P etc., continue to consume more bandwidth, service providers are looking for solu tions to their subscribers’ seemingly insatiable bandwidth appetite. Fortunately, Occam Networks’ BLC 6000 Broadband Loop Carrier (BLC) uses IP as a simple, common service delivery protocol for all services and Ethernet transport to provide the economical, highly scalable bandwidth needed for delivering today’s and tomorrow’s new services.

Meru Wireless Backbone System

The Meru Wireless Backbone System differs from most other wireless networking systems by using a “blanket,” in which every access point uses the same 802.11a and b/g WiFi channels. It essentially aggregates all the GHz frequencies together to give you more bandwidth — an aggregate of 240 MHz of backbone spectrum. This product aims to replace the wire going to the access point (AP) and uses wireless instead, essentially making this “zero-wire” to the desktop and the backbone. This solution enables an enterprise to go all-wireless. The WLAN is the only network — from the core to the device. Meru Networks claims that this product is the only one in the market that can support both voice and data over multi-hop wireless backhaul, with a switch-like experience over an all-wireless enterprise backbone, essentially making them the only solution to “unwire” end-to-end for both voice and data. Meru Networks told TMC Labs, “In the future, all networks will work this way. Wireless CATx will be the de facto connectivity mechanism. The industry segments that are first adopters of this product are: verticals such as universities, manufacturing, retail, hotspots (airports, convention centers, etc.)Horizontal targets are in geographies where old buildings are not pre-wired. This entails large markets in Asia including China, India, Japan, and the remaining Pacific Rim.” The market for this type of innovative product will be especially strong in the SMB, which will enjoy very low deployment cost and no radio frequency (RF) expertise requirements, with the added benefit of the elimination of wire for both voice and data, as well as easiermoves/adds/changes. The Meru Wireless Backbone System provides hierarchical aggregation of capacity over the air similar to EtherChannel, and the ability to provide multi-hop QoS and end-to-end security, and the ability to provide link redundancy and self-healing. Meru’s WLAN product claims to be the first to enable the “unwired office” — entirely cutting the access cable for voice and data. Osaka Gas, one of Japan’s largest utility companies with 50 offices and 6,000 employees, went entirely wireless — no wire for voice or data in any office barring disaster recovery — last year. Some other unique features include full-duplex wireless channels, a significant innovation based on patented antenna technology; Multi-hop QoS for commercial-grade voice+data support, extending Meru’s Air Traffic Control access technology to the wireless backbone; Seamless handoff and Virtual Cell, extended over multi-hop wireless backbone. If the clients are on 802.11g, the system can use the 802.11a channels for the backbone. Instead you can place all the data clients on one 802.11g channel and use the other channels for voice, and the “a” channels for the backbone. When 802.11n arrives, giving more capacity, the system will be compatible with it. Supporting both voice and data over a multi-hop wireless network is unique in the industry and, Meru believes, the pioneer of a trend that will eventually replace wire with wireless entirely. While we’re not ready just yet to give up our super fast Gigabit-wired Ethernet connection, in favor of a 100 percent wireless solution that is slower, we admire Meru for their vision of an unwired world.

Airspan andFujitsu partners to Deliver Carrier Class WiMAX Solution

Is WiMAX the “best” solution for the last mile dilemma facing U.S. service providers seeking to deliver high quality VoIP and IPTV to their customers? The answer to that question, increasingly, is “yes,” but to say WiMAX is the only logical solution — for the now and in the future — would be stretching things a bit. It appears that widespread adoption of the WiMAX standard 802.16e is more than a year off, but in the meantime, U.S. service providers are gravitating to the current, 802.16-2004 standard in droves as they frantically upgrade their networks for the delivery of next generation video and voice services to their customers. Adoption of the technology has reportedly been more pronounced in recent months particularly among operators working in either dense urban or extremely rural regions (in an urban setting, a single WiMAX node can be used to deliver next generation services to dozens, if not hundreds of customers simultaneously - while in rural setting, it can be used to provide access to homes which are too costly to reach via a fixed line). Networking solutions provider Fujitsu is playing a big role in driving WiMAX adoption rates. The company announced it is partnering with WiMAX equipment maker Airspan Networks to deliver a new, end-to-end, turnkey WiMAX solution for U.S. service providers. Fujitsu will become a reseller for the full line of Airpan’s AS.MAX products, and will provide support for the new carrier-class solution through its Network Life Cycle Services. Airspan’s (news - alert) AS.MAX products support a range of end-user devices that integrate both WiMAX and WiFi technologies. Fujitsu (news - alert) plans to enrich these products with advanced network features that will make it possible for carriers to deliver quality VoIP services, including integrated SIP gateway messaging to enable call control and capacity reservation for voice traffic. With the combined solution, voice capacity is not reserved until requested, and can be dynamically adjusted while maintaining QoS, thus enabling the optimal use of radio link capacity while offering an ideal consumer experience. http://www.airspan.com ,http://www.fujitsu.com

TransNexus and Emergent Partners for VoIP Peering

TransNexus and Emergent Network Solutions certified the Entice Session Border Controller and NexSRS certificate authority and settlement server, which, the companies said, are now fully interoperable for secure VoIP peering. The system combo uses Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) services for a more secure peer to peer access control and settlement accounting among interconnect peers. This security feature allows VoIP wholesalers, VoIP clearinghouses, IP transport providers, and network co-location providers to “increase customer loyalty and generate new revenues from peer to peer VoIP traffic.” Secure VoIP peering for Entice now includes two new features used to reduce interconnect fraud risk and settlement disputes. “First, digitally signed tokens included with each call setup ensure secure peer to peer access control. Then, real time collection of encrypted call detail records from both source and destination peers eliminate interconnect settlement billing disputes,” explained the companies. In order to enable secure VoIP peering, the Entice Session Border Controller communicates with the NexSRS settlement server using the OSP peering protocol, an operations and billing support (OSS/BSS) protocol standard. The OSP peering protocol is supported by VoIP platforms such as Cisco, Veraz, Asterisk, SIP Express Router and OpenSER.

Labs.Voiceone.Com offers an open forum for users to preview, test free of charge, and provide feedback on new IP communications services developed by VoiceOne. VoIP, Inc.'s CTO Shawn Lewis said, "Cick4Me is designed to meet the needs of active, on-the-go businesspeople. It integrates the World Wide Web, VoIP calling, mobile telephony and landline functionality all within one product. It even enables users to connect with others without giving out their phone number." Added Lewis, "Users are not required to sign up for any type of VoIP phone service or use Instant Messaging or any special programs to make and receive phone calls through this service. It's also customizable and has numerous exciting features and functionality, including working with cell phones and the ability for the service to be embedded into e-mails." VoIP, Inc.'s President and CEO Gary Post commented, "Click4Me.Net is one example of the many ground-breaking services being developed by our VoiceOne subsidiary that make creative use of VoIP technology and demonstrate our ability to deliver innovative solutions tailored to meet the fast-changing needs of our customers. Registered Click4Me users maintain their settings online and can set their availability status to Away, Do Not Disturb and Available. Registered users can also change the unpublished number at which they wish to be reached. Additional features allow users to apply custom filters for blocking specific callers or require special PINs to complete calls. There is no charge for the call. Click4Me technology can be integrated into emails, web pages, web advertisements and more by embedding a simple hyperlink tag like "Call Me Now." VoiceOne plans to add additional Click4Me.Net features over the coming weeks, including voicemail, text message notifications, and text message dialing. Interested parties may either go to labs.voiceone.com or www.click4me.net to learn more and to start testing the world's first free Web-click calling service.
