Solo: Make Skype calls without a PC

Like i have always said, sitting in front of a computer in order to make a voip call is really becoming outdated. Most voip users now are more interested in devices that will enable them make voip calls without been tied to their computers.
It is not suprising that lot of companies have produced devices that allow users to do just that, most of which i have reviewed on this blog. The latest addition to this class of devices is Solo developed by Ipevo. Solo plug directly to your broadband connection and enables you to make and receive Skype calls without your PC
Solo uses chipsets from Brodcom and PXA 270 CPU from Intel. It is likely to hit the market on June 11. The price of the device is something around $150. It is expected to be added to Skype's Online Store soon after its release.

"The VoIP bandwagon is attracting interest from start ups and the
mobile operators alike. Start ups emerge to take advantage of growing,
quantified interest. For the networks its more of a knee jerk reaction in an
effort to salvage a piece of the pie that threatens them.

"However, one aspect that has been overlooked, is the redundant need
for separate, VoIP enabled handsets. Whilst this is a way that the mobile
operators and manufacturers can attract a share of newfound revenue,
consumers don't actually need to purchase a separate handset. Their
existing mobile phones can in fact be Skype enabled very easily. While the
debate over how to provide seamless roaming WiFi connections rages,
coupled with the existing limitations of WiFi hotspots, it's often the most
straight forward, and easy to use devices which are winning the market
share.

"Consumers can leapfrog the perceived requirement to get hold of a
handset that will make and receive Skype calls. VoiceLink from IP Drum is a
gadget that sits at your home or office which transmits Skype calls to
and from your mobile phone using the existing GSM connection for the
last mile. You can even import your Skype contacts book to your mobile
phonebook!

"You'll only ever need to purchase the router box once and set it to
your current, and all future mobile phones. The service can enable almost
every mobile phone on the market. Why have a separate handset to add to
all the other devices we carry these days? There is simply no need."
