Vonage and Sprint decide to settle a patent dispute
The latest gist is that Vonage, a US-based residential VoIP player has agreed to pay Sprint Nextel almost $80 million as a settlement for the two year old patent dispute it had with the other company.
Here is a quick breakdown of what the $80 million money was used for. $35 million was for using the Sprint license in the past while $40 million is for a fully-paid future license and finally, $5 million as prepayment for services rendered. After all this, Vonage will now be able to access Sprint's VoIP portfolio. The portfolio is made up of more 100 patents that covers different methods, components and systems needed for residential VoIP services.
According to Vonage, "We are pleased to resolve our dispute with Sprint and enter into a productive future relationship. We believe this deal is good news for Vonage, our customers and our shareholders".
Before all this started, a jury in the U.S. District Court of Kansas City had already ordered Vonage to pay Sprint the sum of $69.5 million. All this took place on the 25th of September, 2007. The money was meant for the payment of damages for impinging six patents.
Vonage is yet to resolve its patent dispute with Verizon Communications.
