Vonage has been sued again
Believe it or not, but AT&T has just sued Vonage in the U.S. District Court of the Western District of Wisconsin. The reason being for patent infringement. This news is based on media reports.
Well, it looks like Vonage is always knee deep in one controversy or the other with different companies. As soon as it solves one dispute, another one comes up to take the troubled VoIP startup once more to the court of law. Right now you can't tell when the annoying Vonage will come up with a clean face.
According to AT&T, Vonage is unlawfully using their wide-area packet technology system and insists Vonage to refrain from using the platform. AT&T is also looking for triple damages and attorneys' fees from Vonage. The amount of money involved in this dispute was not actually mentioned.
Its hard to believe that just a few days ago, Vonage settled two legal disputes. The most recent one was with the company, Klausner Technologies. In their agreement, they concluded to use their patents i.e. the one related to voicemail services.
But before this, the residential VoIP service provider accepted to pay about $80 million to Sprint Nextel as part of the settlement. In exchange for this, Sprint Nextel has accorded more than 100 VoIP patents to Vonage.
Can you believe that right now, Vonage is still fighting a legal battle with Verizon Communication. Vonage was ordered to pay $58 million in damages, and also 5.5 percent royalties on future revenues for violating three Verizon patents.
