VoIP to gain from emergency calls
Thanks to new government policies that would soon be implemented, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services would get better in the future. Ofcom, the Telecoms watchdog has just announced the plans that have been put in place to make all VoIP providers, provide access to emergency services. The IT Week thinks this would really be beneficial to VoIP users and also help take the service to a greater level. Based on reports from IT Week, the take-up and development of VoIP in the UK could be driven on by the new plans, which are set to come into force in 2008.
The changes that will be put in place includes the creation of operator services and directory enquiries, in addition to special services for disabled people which would be charged at special rates.
Though there has been some fear that the new addition might hinder the development of VoIP in the short-term by making providers less inclined to support incoming calls, Ofcom affirmed strongly that this will not happen because market forces will be too strong for providers to resist.
Based on this, IT Week can now see that bringing in emergency call access on VoIP will greatly help in improving and widening the range of services provided by VoIP operators.
