VoIP to be banned in Dubai free zones

Gulf News has reported that VoIP calls will be blocked from Dubai free zones from next month. This is the result of a ruling by the UAE's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority. This ban is expected to affect all calls originating from PC's to fixed or mobile phones via the internet. It was rumoured towards the end of last year that TRA would actually lift its ban on VoIP technology. All this efforts i believe will not yield any appreciable result, VoIP has come to stay and no amount of ban can stop it from growing and becoming more popular. Instead of banning countries should be looking for ways to earnest the benefits of VoIP. Even voip calls don't only originate from PC's alone nowadays, lot of voip calls originate from regular phones so banning calls that originate from PC's will not stop people from using voip if they so wish.

Mobile VoIP with Nokia Nseries: The New Engin and Nokia Innovation

Engin in partnership with Nokia has introduced a mobile voip solution with the new Nokia N series WLAN capable mobile phone. The new invention is the N80 “multimedia computer” which is a quad band GSM/WCDMA and WiFi capable phone released oversea in the third quarter of last year.
The Nokia and Engin collaboration has also brought a SIP client to the N80, which will avail Engin customers with opportunities to make voip calls utilizing the wireless networks hotspots at work, at home or even public networks.
In the words of Ilkka Tales, the chief executive officer of Engin “more and more people are starting to use internet telephony to dramatically reduce the cost of their home phone with greater intensity. Already about twenty five per cent of phone users are regularly using their mobile phones to access the internet, which clearly shows that a large section of the market is beginning to be aware of the value of convergent devices.
“Seamlessly blending together surfing the web and making cost efficient internet calls has been made possible by the Nokia N80 Internet edition” He added.
“With the quick increase in the number of Wi-Fi hotspots in the home, office and public areas, people now have improved access to utilize the Nokia N80 to make calls irrespective of their location the Engin network at our low cost call rates” Tales asserted. Ten cents would be charged for untimed national calls made with Nokia N80 and 20 cents would be the call rate for untimed calls to 20 international locations. The director of multimedia sales for Nokia's APAC region, David Watkins retorted, “convergence is presenting more avenues for consumers and Nokia's N Series unfolds the possibilities of the internet going” Engin's new innovation, the VoIP phone services is a good illustration.

Webtalker 5000 – Skype Phone from Topcom

The Webtalker 5000 is one of the numerous skype phones unveiled at the CES 2007. Aimed at the numerous Skype users and the best feature of the webtalker 5000 as far as i am concerned is the fact there is no need to be near a computer to use it. Staying in front of a PC before one can make a voip call is rapidly becoming outdated. All you need to use webtalker 5000 is a router and broadband internet connection. It connects to the internet directly enabling you to use Skype and SkypeOut for your calls with more flexibility and freedom than you would have on a computer especially when used with its Topcom Wireless Expansion Kit which lets you connect through a Wi-Fi network.
Webtalker 5000 has a very robust design. The display looks pretty good with it's 2.4 inch color screen for easy viewing. The keypad is wide enough making operation pretty easy. It uses echo cancellation technology to improve the audio quality of the calls. It also has a hands free function so you don't to hold the phone each time you attend to a call. A wide variety of ringtones is also available to choose from. The Webtalker 5000 will be available as from April and is expected to have a price tag of about $200.

Mobiblu Boxon Review

Mobiblu Boxon is the latest media player from mobiblu with voip capability. It is just two inches in length which makes it very portable and it has very beautiful design. Mobiblu boxon supports OGG, WMA. ASF, Protected WMA and MP3. With a storage space of 1GB you can easily download your music and video to it for your enjoyment while on the move. It has a 1.7 inch 260k full color OLED display which makes watching digital images and video clips on it a real pleasure. With a powerful rechargeable lithium polymer battery, you can enjoy mobiblu boxon for as long twelve hours. Apart from playing back media it is also possible to use it as a mini voice recorder. All you need to do is to plug mobiblu boxon to your computer and it automatically becomes a voip phone handset with which you can make and receive voip calls.
The ergonomics is definitely very effective, it has a 1.7 inch screen on the one side and the controls on the other which makes it very easy to operate. Mobiblu Boxon is already available in the market with a price tag of about £80.00

How will Skype evolve?

Skype is no doubt the most popular voip client at the moment. It was skype that really brought high quality voip to the ordinary users some couples of years back and it has now grown to become a multi-billion dollars business. With more than 50 hardware partners and more than 150 Skype-certified devices it is really at the top end of the voip ecosystem. The question that keep coming to my mind is How will Skype evolve?, What are the things we expect to see in Skype in the near future. Personally i will be looking out for the following:
  • Skype to migrate to more to mobile platforms. A skype for symbian announcement might come sooner than later. Will skype be able to overcome the latency issues that delayed the introduction of Skype over GSM-associated networks?
  • Multi-party video conferencing
  • The evolution of Skype phones to devices that allow Skype to operate independent of a base PC platform but rather directly via an Ethernet connection to a home router.

Talqer 1.0 out of beta and Now include a Plug-In for Skype

Talqer started as a plugin for Google-Talk which added PC-to-phone calling capability to GoogleTalk when it was just a PC-to-PC voip and instant messenger client. The first version of talqer, Talqer 1.0.0.1 is now out of beta and has also include a plugin for Skype the most popular voip client. The new Talqer skype plugin allow you to dial out on TalQer's network using your existing Skype address book. It basically add a big yellow dial button to the Skype UI which you can use to bypass SkypeOut if you want to. The basic business strategy of talqer is to get subscribers to GoogleTalk and now skype to switch to their lower cost. This is why some bloggers are referring to providers like talqer as minute stealer. Minute stealer is a term used to describe providers whose only strategy is get subscribers of other providers to switch to their lower cost service without actually offering anything new. So Talqer is a minute stealer relative to GoogleTalk and Skype. Talqer is in reality using the minute stealing strategy but they are also trying to offer something of their own for example they offer TalqIn numbers in 38 countries which is about 24 countries more than skypeIn numbers. They also claim to give better audio quality because they use dedicated leased communications channels instead of sending their traffic over the public internet. Talqer can be downloaded from www.talqer.com/index.html.

Thinkature – Real-time online collaboration application.

I collaborated with a couple of colleagues on a research project last week using thinkature and i think it is worth writing about. We were working on the design of an appropriate positioning system for a medical robot developed at our institute in conjunction with other research institutes in the US and Australia. I stumped upon thinkature while browsing the web and i decided to just give it a try. I organized a meeting with other colleagues in the US and Australia to discuss some important issues about the project using Thinkature. The meeting last for about two hours and we were able to exchange ideas using chat, voice, picture and diagrams. It was so easy to use, most of the time you just need to drag and drop pictures for your achive or draw in the virtual workspace. It ended a very successful meeting and we achieved all that we set out to do. It was as if we were in the same room. Thinkature is a colloboration system designed specifically for the web, It is so easy to use and it worked from any web browser. You chat inside a virtual workspace, exchange ideas using pictures and diagrams with colleagues, friends or business partners thousand of kilometers away. Thinkature comes with integrated voice chat but i had the best experience using it with Skype. The workspace is a persistent one and do not need saving. It gives a feeling on being in the same room with the people you are collaborating with. I have not stop using it since my first expericence and i am regularly suggesting ways of improving it to its developer. Check out www.thinkature.com for more details.

Brunei Authorities wants to Regulate VoIP

Authoriteis in Brunei are nursing the ambition to institute regulatory laws on the use of voip for commercial purpose. Because of the low cost of long distance calls associated with voip it has become extremely popular among expatriates in Brunei and and Bruneians with close relations abroad. Consequently the use of voip in Brunei has increased tremendously in the past few years. This has lead to the Brunei Darussalam's Authority for Infocommunications Technology Industry (AiTi) to make moves to further create awareness on regulatory and licensing frameworks of the local telecommunication industry.
The acting CEO of AiTi Abdul Mutalib Pehin Dato Yusof said at a public dialog organized to discuss voip regulation, that the proliferation of unlicensed Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) providers within Brunei Darussalam had led to an urgent call to educate the public on the need for stricter regulations and a licensing framework for such services. He acknowledged the fact that the reselling of telecommunications long-distance call services through VoIP were making its way into the country. He also made it clear that the intension is not to the personal use of free voip client such as Skype but only the commercial use of voip will be regulated.
This move to regulate voip is not limited to Brunei has several countries around the world have also made similar move. Telecom regulators gathered in Geneva in 2005 for the International Telecommunications Union Global Symposium for Regulators (ITU GSR) to address regulatory issues on VoIP, and in 2006 VoIP became the main agenda of discussion.
