Review of Verizon One

You need to get to see and know this new device from verizon, you would really love it, I can assure you. It is known as verizon one, an all in one, total, complete, whole communications device. This device could be used for many things such as, web browsing, mails checking, stream music, image previewing from a digital camera, calendar viewing and to cap it all up, it can be used to make voip calls. For all of the afore- mentioned to be made possible, the company deemed it fit to partner with Open Peak.
It is only some of the approved contents such as weather, news and move listings that a user can actually be opportune to view. Such browsing experience is beings complained about by users. It amazes one why verizon is not allowing full browsing experience. A probable reason for such an act could be that the company would like to let only those websites which would work better on small screen do the work. Also, the company would prefer that only websites which are of commercial interest to the company be browsed.
This device has a cordless phone which makes it a bit tacky, that is, even through it is bright and colourful, the quality is poor. But this challenge is overcome when this cordless phone is integrated with the voicewing voip sevice for fios from verifon since both are compatible. This device supports both traditional and voip calls. Streamed music could be enjoyed via attached stereo speakers also, image previewing all-in-one. You will be able to connect to a printer, play move trailers and support up to five handsets with this device. A combination of built-in wi-fi and Ethernet connection enables access to internet based connect possible.

Virtual VoIP Carriers are The Main Drivers of China's VoIP Industry

According to In-Stat reports, by the end of 2011, china's broadband voip subscriber base that is being served by telecom carriers will rapidly expand to 9.53 million from the 720,000 in 2006.
In-Stat carried out a research and came up with the report that virtual carriers still have Legal market space. According to in-stat, what has led to the rapid market recognition of voip services in china is the relatively high long distance calling rates in her (china's) telecom market. Aside form the success of IP card services, telecom carriers are continuously pushing for broadband IP telephony servcie in china.
An in-stat analyst, kelvin li said “Another class of providers, virtual voip carriers (VVCs) provide PC-to-phone services by deploying soft-switching systems on internet and media gateways between the internet and public switched telephone networks.”
Li further explained that “the ministry of information industry (in china) has declared that broadband IP telephony service can be legally provided only by traditional service providers, this VVCs are operating illegally and have little phone-number resources (most subscribers can only make outgoing calls.”
He noted that what puts VVCs in advantaged position are the intense competition among voice service providers and VVCs lower price over traditional long-distance calling or IP cards services.
“However, due to intense competition among voice service providers, and VVCs' lower price compared with traditional long-distance calling or IP card services, VVCs are having success”, he said.
In the year 2005, VVCs had 1.1 million consumer subscribers and it was estimated by in-stat that this figure rose to around 1.23 million in the year 2006. in addition, in-stats forecasts that consumer broadband IP telephony subscribers served by VVCs will grow to 12.96 million by the year 2011.

APPLE and CISCO Reach an Agreement on iPhone Trademark.

Cisco reach agreement with apple on iphone trademark. Under the agreement, its stated that both companies can use the iphone trademark on their product throughout the world.
Cisco and Apple will explore opportunities for interoperability in the areas of security, consumer and enterprises communications. Other terms of agreement are confidential.
Cisco and Apple will be dismissing any suits against each other on the trademark issue. For Apple, reaching an agreement is certainly a victory as its existing products too come with the mark and it would have wanted to continue with the trend because its iphone was one of the most awaited phone and people had already started associating iphone with Apple without even realising that Cisco held the rights to it.
Cisco did the right thing to reach an out of count settlement with apple because even if it won the case, ti would have been a lost fight for them since the name was already in peoples mind.

FCC chairman Kevin J. Martin says that the ruling would not only smooth the way for voip but would also encourage deployment of broadband, which is needed for successful voip use.
By increasing competition in the telephone sector, this action helps the deployment of broadband facilities and ensures that consumers in all areas of the country reap the benefits competition in the form of lower prices, innovatives services and more choice, Martin concluded.

Skype appealed to FCC for the restoration Carterfone rules

Skype has appealed to the FCC telling them to force cell phone carriers to losen their control on the type of software and hardware which can be connected to their networks. They want the restoration of carterfone rules which are a remembrance of the AT and T monopoly era which enabled users to connect to their networks even if were neither manufactured or had the approval of AT and T.
Their petition states that FCC should start with a rule making procedure for deciding on wether the restrictions imposed by the carriers on access of subscribers to internet based applicatons are fair or not, because there are so many carriers which don't allow the use of Skype on their networks.
As Skype is the only voip company fighting this battle without support from colleagues, the cellular companies are wholly opposing this petition.
Skype wants carterfone rules again because it was what help the breaking the monopoly of AT and T and allow so many innovations to take place but getting access to the cellular networks would be a tough nut to crack as opening the doors to skype would surely eat into their revenue and they would definitely oppose it on all counts.
Skype might find this fight very difficult to win mainly due to the fact they are without support from other voip companies but that does not mean they have know chance because skype is a very strong voip company.

Vonage Loses VoIP Patent Case to Verizon

Vonage has been dealt a major blow by federal jury ruling that the company has infringed on three of Verizon communications VoIP patent. The eight-member jury consiquently ordered vonage to pay damages of $58 milion to the Verizon in addition to a 5.5% royalties on all future sales. This is much less that the $197 milion in damages and 19% royalties sought by verizon but this will still have serious consequences for Vonage, a company that reported a net loss of $65 million in the 4th quater and remains a long way from profitability.
Stanford Group analyst, Clayton Moran is of the opinion that the verdict was harder on Vonage than expected and goes futher to say that: “In and of itself, it doesn’t render its business model as not viable, but I think it will have a significant impact on the stock,” . He can't be more right as vonage stoct which opened at $17 in May 2006 and have performed miserably ever since, declined 8% in the hours after the ruling, and closed at a record low of $4.17 in last fridays trading and has not recorverd much since then. This are definitely not good times at vonage and its yet to be seen how Vonage will overcome its numerous problems.

Do VoIP in Oman and go to Jail

Oman's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority has once again shown that they have refused to face the reality that voip has come to stay in the telecommunications industry and can not be stopped by any ban or intimidation. While other countries are working on way to earnest the great economic potential of voip technology they in Oman have decided to ban the use of VoIP at cyber cafes in the country, this is as reported by the Times of Oman. They also treating that violators could face up to two years in prison and fines ranging from OR5,000 to OR50,000. In reality they are doing this to protect the interest of telecom companies like Omantel, Nawras and Oman Mobile whose revenue has been hit by low-paid workers using voip technology to make cheap calls to their home countries. I personally believe that the only way out for this telecoms companies is to use this amazing technology to cut down the cost of calling through them in order to attract customer. Using intimidating regulations will not stop the grown of voip technology with its powerful cost cutting feature and added value to phone calls.

Send free SMS worldwide with GizmoSMS

The people at SIPphone, the company behind gizmo project seems to be working really hard to ditch out as many useful services as they can. Just some couple of weeks after launching gizmoCall they have now added another feature to the ever popular gizmo project voip client nichnamed GizmoSMS. With GizmoSMS you can send SMS to any mobile device worldwide direct from you PC and at the moment sending SMS is free.
Though SMS might not have the same impact it had about 5 years ago any longer but it is still very relevant in todays world and the guys at SIPphone are quite aware of that fact too. I have tested the service by sending SMS to my mobile phone and two of my friends but only mine was delivered while my friends did not receive the SMS. I think this is just a hitch on their server side or its just overloaded with lot of sms request. I hope they will put everything in perfect order soon and users will be able to enjoy this nice feature hassles free.

University of the West of England Provides VoIP for New Student Village.

Voip telecommunication system have been provider for new student village with 45 additional extensions by the university of the west of England which migrate to voip system of communication. As soon as funds becomes available the university of west of England plans to roll out more connections across six university sites.
Barstow Jonathan who is the telecommunication manager doesn't accept full roll out of the Alcatel lucent technology for another 8-10 years. Barstow said their main challenges is getting to know a new system and losing control of the transmission medium. They now have to rely on their transmission colleagues whereas before we had full control of the existing copper wires, now we have to get data port configured by someone else if they want to put a new telephone in.
Barstow says the organization will see a reduction in the amount of work required and improved flexibility when moving phone extensions once the system is fully rolled out.
Through savings on the circuits, a return on investment will be achieved as the university looks forward at implementing an audio conference bridge over IP called Allatel myTeamwork which allows sharing of data applications as well as video conferencing.
University of the west of England lecturer could video record his lecture and student can replay the lecture, said Jonathan Barstow, the telecommunications manager.

The IP system have 80,000 users across the network plus 250 schools, 40 libraries, transport depots and 100 social services offices. Mark woodward continued, saying Warwickshire county council main challenges are cost of implementation, reliability and cultural issues associated with helping the customers to adjust to new technology. He said “we brought out the system to non- technical staff and its the slowest links on the network to prove that it works.
Warwickshire, which avoided having to lease expensive BT lines, as a procure to full voip implementation, they started running telephone lines over IP trunking. Using voip, you save 50% on annual phone line rental, and woodward said they have already done it in a few places and they saved 1,800 pounds per annual on just a single link.

You can now make calls by selecting number from web pages. NR-IPKTV is a linux built IP videophone manufactured by Iwatsu Electric co. This phone uses opera software's opera for devices browser along with an email client. The prime target is business users and it is one component of Iwatsu's precot (Premium Communication Tool).
NR-IPKTV voip phone uses computer translations from Iwatsu's Japanese language website. Precot includes an IP PBX server available in three option that support 16, 24, or 48 users. The NR-IPKTV precot server appears to incorporate PHS (personal handyphone system) network gateway. This phone which is available in handheld cordless phone, door and several desktop models is based on freescale i.MX21 processor, a power stingy nRM9 SoC (system on chip).
NR-IPKTV phone exploits the i.MX21 media engines for H.263, mpeg4 video, Jpeg, eliminating the need for seperate DSP to handle G.711 compression and echo cancellation. The Opera browser was enhanced with "phone-to-tag" support said to enable users to place calls by simply selecting phone numbers from web directories. Another interesting feature of the device appears to be some kind of "desktop shopping" deal with Amazon of Japan that lets users make purchases -- possibly of office supplies -- from the interface.
According to the executive vice president of opera, scott Hedrick Iwatsu's precot solution is breaking new ground in integrating the web into IP telephony. Since the phone have an internet browser, it allows rich integration of corporate data, web applications voice and video calling. You can call from the corporate intranet or directly from a web site.

Make free international calls with Nimbuzz

Nimbuzz is a mobile application that supports mobile to pc and pc to mobile calling, instant messaging on a number of network like goggle talk, MSN/ live messenger and Nimbuzz. Also free or almost free international calling and text/ sms messaging to your cell phone.
The application is very easy to install and use, a seamless OTA (over the air) experience. It works with Nokia N-series like Nokia N93 and some other cell phones.
Considering the high cost of making international calls directly from your mobile phones, Nimbuzz is a viable alternative to paying international rates to your cellular provider. This is an interesting service that is really easy to use, i have installed it on my Nokia N93 and now building my contact list to be able to test it extensively but you read the Oliver Starr post at MobileCrunch about Nimbuzz.
