VoIP Service Provider Kayote Networks Closes Q1

Kayote Networks, Inc., the leading provider of hosted Voice over IP (VoIP) interconnectivity solutions, today announced its first-quarter results, boasting positive growth and continued momentum. Kayote announced a growth in revenue of 49% over the previous quarter, a 56% increase in customer base for its VoIP Traffic Manager (VTM) platform and a 19% jump in overall VoIP call minutes running through its system.
Kayote’s VTM 1.5 allows carriers of all sizes, cable operators, Internet Telephony Service Providers and enterprises of all sizes to offer their customers the most advanced VoIP services available and maintain full control of the network, without having to invest in the deployment and maintenance of a costly VoIP network. Kayote closed Q1 with 47 customers using the VTM 1.5, an increase of over 56%, quarter-on-quarter.
Kayote’s progress is also demonstrated by the increase in volume of VoIP traffic on its carrier-grade, highly-scalable VoIP network. From Q4 2006 to Q1 2007 there was a 19% jump in VoIP minutes running through Kayote’s network.
The increased number of VTM customers strengthens Kayote’s global reach. In addition to the company’s existing presence in North America and Europe, Kayote gained customers from Bolivia , Columbia , Curacao, Jordan , Latvia , Macedonia , Saudi Arabia , South Africa , Spain and Turkey during the first quarter.
“We feel emboldened by our ongoing successes,” said Dr. Baruch Sterman, CEO and founder of Kayote Networks. “Kayote’s recent deal with INTERNEXA in Latin America confirms the inherent worth of the hosted model. As more and more consumers demand VoIP services from carriers, we expect that a growing number of companies will turn to us for best-in-class VoIP solutions.”
Kayote continues to be recognized as a leader in the VoIP industry. During Q1, the company was listed on Pulver 100, the IP Communications industry’s premier listing of privately-held growth companies. Kayote Networks was named to the list, for the second consecutive year, due to its innovative Hosted VoIP solution and the increased adoption of its solution.

Skype & Intel Launch "Gift of Gab" Free Global Calling Mother's Day Promotion

Skype and Intel Corporation today announced a joint effort to advance a shared vision of establishing the personal computer as a central and reliable platform for voice and video calling over the Internet. By offering an Intel-sponsored day of free global calling over Skype on Mother’s Day to U.S. and Canadian consumers, the two companies are encouraging U.S. and Canadian users to take advantage of Internet communication via their PCs or laptops. This builds on the success of the Skype Unlimited Calling plan which has enabled thousands of consumers across the U.S. and Canada to save hundreds of dollars on domestic calling since it was introduced in December 2006.
According to a March 2007 In-Stat report entitled U.S. Residential Voice-Over IP Market Dynamics and Market Tracker, the number of VoIP households in the U.S. continued to grow briskly in the fourth quarter, with more than 10.6 million households now using VoIP. In-Stat found that while cable providers drove strong adoption of VoIP, Skype gained significant market share in the quarter, consolidating its leading market position at the expense of its client-based VoIP rivals. The report credits Skype’s innovative and disruptive pricing and product strategy for its success, citing the Skype Unlimited Calling plan for allowing registered users to make unlimited SkypeOut™ calls to any phone number in the U.S. and Canada for a flat, annual subscription fee of just $29.95, almost 90 percent less than traditional calling plans that can cost consumers $24.95 per month or more.
“This initiative builds on our efforts to establish Skype as a standard for Internet communications,” said Don Albert, general manager and vice president of Skype North America. “The PC is central to the way consumers and business users connect and collaborate with one another. We’re delighted at how well Skype runs on PCs and laptops featuring Intel® Core 2 Duo processor technology.”
Consumers in the U.S. and Canada can take advantage of Internet communications over Skype by placing free SkypeOut calls to any landline or mobile number around the world on Mother's Day (May 13, 2007). Sponsored by Intel, the “Gift of Gab” promotion represents the first time that U.S. and Canadian users will be able to make free SkypeOut calls to anywhere in the world for a period of 24 hours. Calls from one registered Skype user to another remain free. Usually, SkypeOut calls are billed at per-minute fees depending on the location called, with rates beginning at the low Skype global dialing rate of 2.1 cents per minute. More information about the “Gift of Gab” is available at www.skype.com/go/giftofgab.
Intel is sponsoring the Gift of Gab promotion as a way to demonstrate how audio and video calling are optimized when using PCs powered by the Intel Core 2 Duo processor. For example, Skype conference calls are now clearer and users’ PCs are more responsive during these calls. These improvements are a result of collaborative efforts between Intel and Skype engineers.
“Through Intel and Skype’s ‘Gift of Gab’ promotion, consumers and business users can experience the immediate benefits of the Internet communications lifestyle –especially on Mother’s Day, normally the busiest calling holiday of the year,” said Gregory Bryant, vice president and general manager of Intel's Digital Office Platform Division. “This initiative builds upon our existing efforts with Skype to deliver an enhanced Voice over IP experience. We have optimized the processor and chipset—supporting wide-band high definition audio, for instance—and Skype users have a rich calling experience on their PCs as a result.”
Participants in the “Gift of Gab” promotion who enjoy their trial of Skype’s Internet communications experience on Mother’s Day can sign up for the significant savings of the Skype Unlimited Calling plan for just $29.95 for an entire year of calling to any landline or mobile phone in the U.S. or Canada at skype.com.

Tadiran Telecom Announces Coral® Navigator

Tadiran Telecom®, a leading global IP business telephone and communications supplier, today announced the availability of its newest application, the Coral® Navigator, a complete desktop communication productivity tool that provides a personal portal for harnessing the power of the Coral IPx telephone. The Coral Navigator ties the PC to the phone, combining all types of multimedia communications, phone features and capabilities, and phone administration options - Instant Messaging, user presence, telephone status, video sharing, call preferences, call routing rules, video conversations, call recording - to further increase communication efficiency for users within the Tadiran Coral IPx system.
Coral Navigator is an application that enables the enterprise to streamline business processes and leverage communication as a competitive advantage. The Navigator provides an intelligent communications platform while utilizing presence awareness capabilities, providing the user with a set of tools to communicate with the right person at the right time in the right way.
Coral Navigator provides a global, visual indicator of all activity within the Coral system, giving users an intuitive, PC-based communication productivity tool for getting the most from Tadiran's Coral IPx family of products. Navigator is a presence application allowing users to see the status of other users, set up buddy lists and personal profiles. It provides a visual interface for managing voice conference bridges, making and receiving voice and video calls and Instant Messaging sessions. It also allows users to route and redirect inbound calls based on personal preferences.
"Coral Navigator makes using the phone much easier and interacting with other users better," said Pat Lennon, Tadiran's director of marketing. "For example, Coral Navigator gives each user a searchable call log, and the ability to dial from any Windows-based application that contains a telephone number."
Lennon added, "One of the favorite features of the Coral Navigator is that each individual user gets a visual - or video portal - of the many things the Coral system can do, such as seeing the call status of a co-worker or sending an Instant Message. We're excited about this product because it ties the PC to the Tadiran telephone and improves the effectiveness of great features of our Coral IPx."
Coral Navigator's key features and capabilities include:
Contact Management - Navigator improves the ability to manage inbound communications with rules, profiles and buddy lists. Users can manage their contacts, the complete telephone system directory and personal telephone lists in a single place, so names can be quickly and easily found.
Instant Messaging - A secure "internal only" additional messaging service allows users on the system to communicate with text to other users, an especially useful way of unobtrusively asking a question to a co-worker while they are on a call.
Conference Bridging - Tadiran's Coral IPx systems feature "meet me" conference facilities. Callers simply dial the four-digit bridge number (or are transferred) and automatically enter a meeting place for many callers. With Coral Navigator, the participants can be viewed, muted or removed. This visual representation of who is currently on the bridge confirms each participant.
Call Logging and Recording - A searchable history of call activities that features archiving of recorded phone conversations and rules for setting up automated recordings. A user can easily play a recording, attach it to an email or archive it to a network drive.
Personal Call Rules - Navigator allows users to route calls to other extensions or remote numbers or automatically record a specific caller in the call log.
Profiles and Status - With Navigator, users can set up personal profiles that incorporate rules to deliver calls. Users simply set the status (for example, Default, In a Meeting, On Lunch, On Vacation, Out of Office, etc.) in their personal profile, and their calls will be routed based on the profile status.
Button Programming - Navigator simplifies the customization of the programmable buttons on Tadiran's desk set telephone. Users set up desired features and labels based on their individual needs using simple menus.
Dialer - With Navigator, users can preprogram the system with a set of phone numbers, time to dial and a description of the intended call. When the time arrives, Navigator will remind the user about the call, providing the description of the call and enabling easy dialing.
Tadiran's award-winning family of Coral IPx products are based on open standards, allowing businesses and organizations of all sizes to move to the world of IP-based communications in stages, at the speed that suits their needs. The Coral IPx family includes a breadth of products that combine leading edge Voice over IP (VoIP) technology at the best total cost of ownership, backed by superb voice quality, easy installation and maintenance, secured communications, and a wide choice of user devices to support tele-workers, corporate and branch offices, and road warriors. IOTUM, JAJAH ANNOUNCE STRATEGIC ALLIANCE

iotum and JAJAH, two of the brightest lights in the emerging world of Voice 2.0 and New Presence, today announced a strategic alliance to deliver new capabilities to mobile users and further their shared vision of the future for Internet telephony and mobility.
As a first step, iotum and JAJAH are leveraging their expertise to offer BlackBerry® users the power of iotum’s Talk-Now application for presence-enabled call management combined with JAJAH’s low rates for calling anywhere in the world.
“We saw a clear opportunity to enhance the experience for mobile users by partnering with JAJAH,” said iotum CEO Alec Saunders. “Initially, our collaboration means that iotum Talk-Now users will have one-click access to JAJAH for all their contacts. . In the future, iotum will release other ‘New Presence’–enabled applications in conjunction with JAJAH, such as PIN-less, mobile conferencing.”
Introduced earlier this year, Talk-Now is a revolutionary “New Presence” application for BlackBerry devices that lets users see at a glance who’s available to talk, and share their availability with contacts of their choosing. By combining the capabilities of a to-do list and a buddy list, Talk-Now eliminates phone tag by allowing users to know when the people they need to speak with are available and to see who is waiting to speak with them.
“iotum Talk-Now will allow us to offer our mobile enterprise customers a unique, innovative solution,” said JAJAH co-founder Roman Scharf. “With iotum Talk-Now, workgroups using BlackBerrys now have a seamless JAJAH calling experience. They can check the availability of their team members directly from their screens, and then make low-cost global calls with a single click.”
“Iotum’s Talk-Now provides a unique presence application today. It allows users to deliver personalized presence to each of their contacts,” said IDC Research Manager Will Stofega. “By combining Talk-Now and JAJAH, the two companies have created the world’s premier presence-driven calling network.”
JAJAH launched its global web-activated telephony in March 2006, offering free or low-cost phone calls from regular phones. The service requires no headset, equipment, contract or monthly fee, and registration is free. JAJAH recently announced it has acquired 2 million registered users in its first year of business.
“Talk-Now helps people complete more telephone calls, cuts down on voice-mails and helps them avoid telephone tag,” said iotum’s Saunders. “The beauty of our alliance with JAJAH is that we’re giving users a higher likelihood of completing their calls and at prices that are among the most attractive available anywhere – especially in Europe. Together, iotum and JAJAH increase the productivity of our customers’ teams, while also helping them to manage their telephony costs.”
iotum and JAJAH are both proud members of the 2007 “Pulver 100,” a list of the top privately held growth companies in the converged worlds of media, Internet, communications and entertainment. Brazilian mobile operator Oi lauches Oi Flex, a converged fixed-mobile service.

The Brazilian mobile operate Oi has launched a fixed-mobile convergence service nicknamed Oi Flex. Oi lauched this service with the support of a domestic fixed line operator Telemar. Oi Flex uses a cordless technology to enable Oi subscriber to make mobile calls at fixed line rates when within a 100m radius of their access point. Once the customer moves beyond this maximum limit the phone will switch back to the Oi's mobile network.
This is based on the personal handyphone service (PHS) and have the potential to considerably reduce the cost of communications for mobile phone users. This kind of service has been in existence in Europe for a very long time, a good example is homezone from o2 germany where subscriber can make call from their mobile phone at the rate of fixed lines within about 300m radius of their home. It is generally believed that Oi is launching this service now due to pressures from voip which has given users avenue to make free or cheap local and international calls and mobile operators have to respond or get their revenue depleted.

With Imagine's technology, three (3) HD-VOD VBR streams can occupy a 256 QAM channel at the same quality as today's maximum of two (2) HD-VOD Constant Bit Rate (CBR) streams. Similarly, fifteen (15) SD-VOD VBR streams can share a 256 QAM channel at the same quality as today's maximum of ten (10) SD-VOD CBR streams. Similar results apply to SDV.
"Our agreement with SeaChange is an important milestone for us," stated Marc Tayer, Imagine's SVP, Marketing & Business Development, "due to their prominent role in the VOD market segment. Interoperability of SeaChange's Axiom Core SRM software and VOD servers with Imagine's VBR/StatMux solution is a watershed event for the cable industry."
Imagine's Quality On Demand GatewayTM (QOD Gateway), part of its QOD Product Suite, integrates Imagine's software on a carrier-grade, off-the-shelf hardware platform, available from multiple suppliers. It employs industry-standard open interfaces and plugs seamlessly into existing infrastructure, allowing interoperability with multiple VOD Servers, Session Resource Manager (SRM) systems, and EdgeQAM devices.
Tom Rosenstein, VP Business Development for SeaChange, added "Imagine has developed a very innovative solution for the industry, which will help operators expand their VOD offerings in a much more bandwidth-efficient manner. This is especially important as HD-VOD demand continues to ramp up. Our initial interoperability testing is showing they're right on track."
Virtually all multi-channel digital broadcast signals take advantage of VBR/StatMux in order to deliver the best video quality at the most efficient bit rate. The addition of Imagine's QOD Gateway system brings these benefits to VOD and SDV, enabling end-to-end VBR and up to 50 percent more streams per 256 QAM channel, while maintaining excellent video quality. The QOD Gateway allows operators to maintain pre-encryption and session-based encryption for VOD, and centralized bulk encryption for SDV.

Facts About Iristel's HD VoIP Service

Iristel announcement about their service kicked off a debate in the telecom blogosphere. Question like what exactly is High Definition voip and do you need it?Is there no hope anywhere but Skype?, pop up.
Any discussion of HD voip quickly turns to skype, and the question, why skype to skype calls comes up?. Skype uses a translation algorithm (a “code”) called ISAC that captures 16khz of voice frequency, rather than the 8khz that regular public switched telephone network (PSTN) calls and most voip calls do, by capturing and transmitting this much wider range of voice frequencies, Skype voice quality is much more realistic.
When using skypeout calls which must transition to the PSTN using codes that only capture 8khz of sound, the great quality of skype to skype calls is lost. Alec Saunders writes about Iristel that it uses a 16khz but getting HD voip is impossible probably only when you call another Iristel user, this happens because calls will go either through PSTN at some point or use other voip networks that only capture 8khz.
Saunders cites GIPS and Diamondware as companies that have successfully addressed non-codec problems. GIPS have range of a la carte products while Diamondware features a vertically integrated voip media risk.
One effort to watch in HD voip is speex, an open source project dedicated to creating a patient free audio compression format; since the codec would be free and can handle voice sampling of 8, 16 or 32khz. The speex technology is bound to have an impact once it is out of beta.
HD voip is definitely worth going for as it emerges from its current home in skype to skype or Iristel to Iristel calls. Call quality is a differentiation for voip providers and a potential advantage for business users. Since much time is not wasted in repeating a name. voip providers codec or business own equipment doesn't effectively capture the range of human speech.

VoIP Causes a Reduction in International Calls Rates in Africa.

The increasing use and popularity of Voip services in African countries have cause a great reduction in call rates for international calls. Before 2005 making an international call from an African country cost as high as $1 or more per mins. But from 2006, nineteen African telcos slash their calls rates, now voip has caused the rates of call cost to plummet. It now cost about 20 cents or lesss for international calls in most African countries. Legalization of voip and increased competition has forced these carriers to bring down the call rates.
These companies have come to realize that their very existence could be put to jeopardy if they did not correct their call pricing. It is noteworthy that voip is making an impact in the remotest part of the world and its bringing possible changes. Such is the power of amazing voip technology.

Callvantage softphone call rates slashed by AT & T

AT & T have slashed rates of international calls made using their call vantage softphone service. This slash rates is applicable to around 40 international countries. Oil giant Royal Dutch plans Rollout of VoIP based Communication Platform for her Global Operations

Office communications server 2007, windows Vista along with office 2007 and Exchange server 2007 would all be put to test, this is due to begin this year as planned by shell. As also part of its plans, it is projecting or forecasting rolling the platforms into production by early 2008. Nortel Communication server 1000 IP PBX is currently being run in shells data centres. It hosts around 1,000 IP phones worldwide.
Shell plans to begin switching over large numbers of employees to office communicator softphone clients, hosted by the Microsoft OCS platform, as well as Nortel IP phones being managed by CS 1000 IP PBXs. This plan of switching over would kick off as soon as the Microsoft infrastructure is put in place.
During a presentation at Voicecon, the group IT architect at Royal Dutch Shell, Johan Krebbers said, “ultimately, we dont see the need for separate IP Telephony and Microsoft managing platforms. That is our vision, but it depends on whether Microsoft delivers”.
It is hoped that would deliver its forthcoming Office communication Server – a session Initiation Protocol (SIP) based, real time communication server which can act as an IP PBX among other role. The multi-year plan of shell includes a gradual migrations of hundreds of disparate PBX systems in more than 110 countries to a centralized voip, managing and collaboration infrastructure based on Microsoft servers and Nortel IP PBX and gateway technology. By the time Nortel IP telephony technology starts acting like a bridge between legacy telephony and voip, then, the oil giants core voip network would eventually shift to Microsoft OCS.
Krebbers said, “We will not have a separate Nortel IP PBX infrastructure if the OCS servers prove to be stable enough and offer the right amount of features”. The United State of America, the Netherlands and the Malaysia are the three data centers that would host the Microsoft servers. The Microsoft servers will handle all voip call control for more than 40,000 IP PBX -like call control. (Most IP PBX vendors which includes Avaya, Cisco, Mitel, Nortel, and others have products that interoperate with Microsoft OCS.
Krebbers said OCS 2007 and Exchange will serve as the core voip and managing platforms for the company with the forthcoming voice mail features that will be included in Microsoft server 2007.Nortel nonetheless, will still have a role in shells network for specialized applications such as call centers. Nortel voip gateway equipment will also be used in branch offices for backup phone connecting, it would as well be used in data centers to connect to the public switched telephone network.
A major reason behind Shells voip plans is the desire to simplify the company`s worldwide voice infrastructure and consolidating all call control, collaborating and managing servers into three data centers.
“We have many different PBXs out there. There is no centralized management for these systems. Sometimes, we cannot purchase certain types of equipment in certain countries or region. Delivering equipment to some of the remotes part of the world where Shell operates also is a burden.” krebbers said.
There is a plan for a centralized voip system. This system will take the telephony purchasing decisions out the hands of local shell offices subsidiaries. This is actually how system were purchased and deployed in the past.
High values employees such as Scientists, petroleum exploration experts and executives would be able to collaborate more easily and efficiently with Microsoft video Conferencing, IM, voicemail and IP telephony.
“Our whole desire is to bring work to people not people to work. We cant afford anymore to bring experts around the world to the work. The mixed Microsoft/ Nortel networks will use Shells Microsoft Active Directory infrastructure as the base for its global dial plan. IP softphone and hard phone users will appear as extensions on one large system,” krebbers said.
