Truphone Released New Version and Extend FREE Calls to 40 Countries offer until the end of 2007

Truphone has released the latest version of their VoIP mobile software with the debut of Truphone 3.0. In addition to offering free mobile calls between Truphone users and inexpensive calls to anyone else, the new version includes SMS over IP, presence tools and “smart” log-on. Truphone works on Nokia N80 and N95 as well as E-Series devices.
Truphone, the mobile Internet network operator, has added a suite of advanced features to its beta VoIP service for mobile phones and simultaneously extended until the end of 2007 its offer of free calls to 40 countries. Truphone's new capabilities demonstrate the distinct advantages of its true IP approach over 'bridging VoIP' services, which ultimately have to rely on traditional telephony.
The new SMS over IP capability brings the prospect of unlimited free SMS messages between on-net Truphone users, with a flat-rate tariff of GBP0.07/USD0.15 to all other regular mobile numbers worldwide.
Presence functionality enables users to know exactly when they can make a free call or send a free text message to another Truphone user. Smart log-on means a Truphone-enabled handset now “takes care of its owner” by automatically connecting to previously used Wi-Fi access points. Truphone over 3G is made available at the request of customers with suitable 3G tariffs. While this allows low cost VoIP calls from many more locations, Truphone still recommends VoIP over Wi-Fi as being of higher call quality and less susceptible to high charges data charges.
Multi-SIM capability enables Truphone to supports travelers who take international SIM cards with them abroad. Calls to their Truphone number will reach them on whichever SIM they're using at the time. Truphone 3.0 also brings compatibility with a greater number of routers, reducing the likelihood of port-blocking; a simplified, more intuitive installation process; and a significant number of bug-fixes.
Existing Truphone customers and anyone signing up for Truphone before Sept. 30 can make free Truphone calls to 40 countries until the end of 2007. Anyone can get Truphone by sending a text message with the word 'Tru' to. Also futher information are available at http://www.truphone.com/blog

VoIP Inc's VoiceOne subsidiary doing well and driving company's growth.

VoIP, Inc. announced today that its VoiceOne subsidiary continues to generate substantial increase in monthly minutes of use. Since the new management team joined the Company in September, monthly minutes carried over the Network have increased by approximately 375% due to increased customer usage and the expansion of its facilities based network. The Company’s revenue has also increased by approximately 400% compared to the previous year, due to a higher billable rate per minute. In addition to higher revenue, the Company has also significantly reduced the cost of carrying the traffic.
“We continue to make progress in increasing the utilization of our Network, through the signing up of blue-chip customers,” said Anthony J. Cataldo, VoIP, Inc.'s Chairman and CEO. “At the same time, we have streamlined operations, reduced interest expense and focused on reaching profitability. Despite challenges created by a legacy capital structure, VoIP has never been in a better position to drive revenue growth and improve operating results.”
The Company has significantly reduced costs through investments that it has made in its network. The Company completed the initial phase of its nationwide network infrastructure service through the expansion into additional locations in New York, Florida, Massachusetts and Georgia, which now allows it to service more than 50 million households and business subscriber lines. The expansion includes the build-out of the Company’s own facilities, which replace and expand uncovered areas in the U.S. This has enabled the Company to enhance market penetration, improve quality of service and reduce its overall cost of goods for products and services sold. Additional expansion is expected to continue throughout the year, ultimately enabling the company to offer services in 21 additional states thru use of its own network to more than 200 million subscriber and enterprise lines.
“We continue to enhance our reputation as a quality provider of network carrier services,” said Shawn Lewis, VoIP, Inc.’s Chief Operating Officer. “Several of our recent contract wins reflect our ability to provide low-cost, high quality solutions to leading companies throughout the country.”

WebDialogs Release version 8.0 of Unyte Meeting

WebDialogs Inc., a leading provider of multimedia conferencing services, today announced its newly enhanced version 8.0 of Unyte Meeting is now available. Unyte Meeting is the company’s affordable and easy-to-use online conferencing service.
“We received a lot of thoughtful feedback during the public beta test,” said Lou Guercia, WebDialogs CEO. “Both end-users and conferencing providers have given us high marks, especially for our new user interface and video capabilities. Beta-testers also helped us uncover a few minor glitches in the new version, which we fine-tuned before releasing for general availability.”
Following a successful beta test-run as version “Spring ’07,” the latest version has been released for general availability as 8.0 and now provides: 1.) an enhanced interactive user interface with a new look; 2.) innovative videocasting capabilities for conferencing hosts and presenters; 3.) an upgraded audiocasting function, now requiring less bandwidth; and 4.) an expanded presentation-recording capability. The result is a seamless integration of voice, video and online conferencing without the hassles of more complicated conferencing systems.
The upgraded and redesigned user interface has a fresh new look, enhanced icons and an expanded roster that now provides more detail about each conferee’s connection to the meeting, such as Web-only, Web and PSTN, PSTN-only or some other connection.
For the first time, Unyte Meeting’s newest version offers videocasting, giving the host and presenters the ability to broadcast live images of themselves to participants, and providing another level of connectivity between speaker and audience. All that’s needed is a webcam to enable participants to see the speaker in a small corner of the screen while still viewing the meeting materials. Or, a sign-language interpreter could be on camera interpreting the speakers’ remarks to enable people who prefer sign language to participate in the call.
With the upgrade, Unyte Meeting’s audiocasting capability now has a higher compression rate to provide better quality audio sessions for the user, while at the same time decreasing the demand for bandwidth.
And Unyte Meeting also has a recording function now that enables an entire presentation to be recorded and stored as a downloadable archive that can be e-mailed or placed in a Web page.
Overall, Unyte Meeting 8.0 is faster, yet still completely browser-based, with no downloads required for hosts, presenters or participants. The service is based on WebDialogs’ proprietary conferencing technology that is currently used in the market by more than 200 brand names through 70 partner agreements.
One of those partners is Infinite Conferencing, a leading provider of solutions for virtual meetings and events, which offers a private-label version of Unyte Meeting to its customers for Web meetings and “webinars.”
“We’ve been working with the new version of Unyte Meeting during its beta-testing period,” said David Kott, president of Infinite Conferencing, “and we’re very satisfied with the changes WebDialogs has implemented. In particular, the new videoconferencing capability is fantastic. It adds a whole new dimension to Web meetings by enabling participants to hear and see the presenter.”
Users can select from Unyte Meeting or Unyte Meeting Pro plans on a per-usage “metered” basis whenever they have a need for the service. Or they can sign up for fixed-fee plans, such as the Named Seats package, which starts at $38 per month and includes free toll-based audio conferencing. New users are invited to test drive Unyte Meeting Pro with a free 14-day trial by signing up at www.webdialogs.com/products/trial_enterprise.asp.
Unyte Meeting is WebDialogs’ flagship conferencing product and is the only multimedia conferencing tool that provides multimedia minutes for about one-third of what competitors charge for similar capabilities.

LG Introduce LG-KU580, The First Genuine Google Phon

The worlds fifth largest cell phone producer,LG Electronics, has introduced to the market what can be dubed the first genuine google phone. This phone named the LG-KU580 incoporates all the full services of the search engine giant google. Allready available in the Asian market and its expected to hit Europe this week with a price tag between $300 and $400.
``Google's strong search services are just one click away with our phone as we put a hot key that directs users to Google services in a fraction of a second,'' LG official Choi Je-wook said. ``In addition, the phone provides other Google services such as e-mail (G-Mail) and map-viewing (Google Earth). We hope this will be a grand slam,'' Choi said.
Google's applications have been embedded into cell phones before but this is the first time its big three features _ search, e-mail and mapping _ have all been incorporated into one. The three services, originally designed for desktops and laptops, were transformed to be compatible with a cell phone with a 2-inch screen.
``We know Google services are not good for all cell phones due to screens being too small in comparison to a PC monitor, and mobile data transmission is too expensive,'' Choi said. ``However, Google provides a mobile-specific service lineup. As a result, handset users will be able to enjoy a decent service,'' he said.
On top of the Google applications, the LG handset enables people to place or receive a phone call while seeing the face of the user on the other end because it is based on the third-generation W-CDMA system. Short for wideband code division multiple access, W-CDMA is the next-generation mobile telephony platform that is catching on across the world.
The phone boasts other peripheral devices such as a 2-megapixel camera, an MP3 player and Bluetooth technology.

Voxbone Achieves 100 Percent Call Reliability With Fully Distributed, Redundant SIP Trunk Feature

Voxbone, a leading provider of international VoIP origination services to carriers, ITSPs, calling card operators, call centers and other businesses around the world, today released a new feature that transforms its standard SIP trunking into a distributed and fully redundant SIP trunk.
The new feature provides customers with 100 percent call reliability through backup capabilities in a highly cost-effective manner. Previously, Voxbone had enabled customers to configure load balancing on their SIP trunks, enabling them to share the load on different servers in a round robin fashion. The new feature adds a configurable backup SIP trunk on top of that.
According to Rodrigue Ullens, co-founder of Voxbone, "VoIP, in fact, can be more reliable then public switched telephone network (PSTN), if well configured. While achieving the same type of redundancy with PSTN is not impossible, it is very costly to implement and maintain."
Ullens added, "Our redundant SIP trunk feature was the last missing piece to provide 100% resiliency for customers. When a customer activates this feature, our systems start monitoring its primary Uniform Resource Identifier (URI), which is configured by the customer. Whenever our system detects a failure, for example, because the server is down or there is a network problem in the datacenter, calls are automatically re-routed to the backup URI until the primary URI is live again."
The new feature is particularly attractive to distributed call centers and other businesses in which 100 percent reliability is crucial. For example, a customer may have equipment in two datacenters, one on the East Coast and the other on the West Coast. The customer's primary SIP trunk would connect to the first datacenter, while the backup SIP trunk would connect to its second datacenter. In the case of a failure on the primary SIP trunk, all calls would be re-routed to the backup SIP trunk, effectively preventing an outage.
With this new feature, every DID can be mapped to a backup URI in addition to a primary URI, and whenever Voxbone receives a call on a DID, its switches send the call to the currently active URI.
Voxbone leases international VoIP virtual phone numbers and worldwide origination services via VoIP to organizations in North and South America, Europe and Asia/Pacific regions. It delivers high-quality call origination and provides the global infrastructure that enables its customers to expand to international markets quickly and efficiently. Using local DID numbers also called virtual numbers from Voxbone, customers may receive inexpensive, locally dialed phone calls. Using standard VoIP hardware, customers utilize the Voxbone API or web portal for the configuration of the acquired DIDs and to choose to which IP appliance the calls are diverted.

After that, when anyone calls the GrandCentral number, all their telephones ring simultaneously and they can answer from whichever phone is most convenient. Users can control which phones ring, which ring-back tones are played and which voicemail greetings are heard, all based on who is calling. The service is currently free and GrandCentral now offers phone numbers in over 5,500 US cities.
“We were so impressed by the amount of participation of the Web 2.0 community, which was clearly demonstrated through our online voting polls – more than 450,000 votes were cast," said CNET Editor at Large, Rafe Needleman. “Webware.com created the Webware 100 awards to help consumers weed through the vast amount of Web 2.0 websites available and find the best ones they trust to meet their needs.”

Simplay Labs, LLC, is the leading provider of testing technologies, programs and interoperability design standards for the high-definition (HD) consumer electronics industry.
As such, in addition to Pace's current extensive electronic protocol (HDMI and HDCP) testing with CE devices, all of Pace's HD products will undergo expanded testing through Simplay Labs to ensure interoperability with the widest possible range of HDTVs and other HD consumer electronics devices.
Pace Micro Technology Americas VP-Product Development Bruce Gureck commented, "As more and more HDMI products are coming to market, manufacturers are now including multiple HDMI ports on HDTVs and set-top boxes must be able to communicate properly with all of them."
"We are partnering with Simplay Labs to expand our field of testing so we will have a more effective means of getting a representative sample of all of the CE equipment in the market. Tadiran Telecom delivers €2 million communications solution to Irish Rail

Tadiran Telecom®, a leading global IP business telephony and communications supplier, today announced the successful completion of another project with Irish Rail for the Dublin Area Rapid Transport (DART) system and its Central Train Control (CTC) Center. The DART project follows a successful relationship between Irish Rail and Tadiran in which Tadiran supplied a QSIG standard signaling protocol network of over 200 Coral® IPx 500 and Coral FlexiCom PBX systems for the Irish Rail's Emergency Lineside Systems. The projects were delivered through Tadiran's partner in Ireland, Diacom Computer Telephony. The total value of the contracts with Irish Rail is in excess of €2 million.
The overall system concept was conceived with significant design input from the Irish Rail Signalling and Telecoms Group. The DART line supports 30 stations connected to the Central Train Control Center. Diacom installed 30 Coral IPx 500 systems, which are networked to a duplicated redundant Coral FlexiCom 5000 system. The CTC, which is located in Connolly station in Dublin, provides services to each station to support administration telephony and passenger help points, including a passenger hot line and passenger booking offices.
Rinaldo Paolozzi, Head of Telecoms New Projects with Irish Rail said, "Tadiran Coral systems were selected because of their reliability and flexibility. In a rail network environment these are critical requirements and the Coral systems have a proven track record in this respect."
As part of the Transport 21 plan initiated by the Irish Government to address Ireland's infrastructural requirements for the 21st century, Tadiran and Diacom were selected to provide Irish Rail with the telecommunications solution to support the new nationwide automated level crossing system. Transport 21 is the capital investment framework through which the transport system in Ireland will be developed over the period 2006 to 2015. This framework will address the twin challenges of past investment backlogs and continuing growth in transport demand. The projects and programs that make up Transport 21 will aim to increase accessibility, ensure sustainability, expand capacity, increase use and enhance the quality of the Irish railroad system. Tadiran will supply a redundant Coral FlexiCom 6000 system with fully duplicated fiber remote shelves to service over 1,000 emergency level crossing telephones. A particular feature of the system is the level crossing telephones, which incorporate a self-test module and are vandal resistant.
"Our success with Irish Rail, as well as many other rail projects including very large contracts in India, China and Russia are based on Tadiran's ability to provide products that are robust and flexible. Rail networks require a telephone system that meets very precise and strict operational and safety standards," said Zeev Aviv, VP of Sales and Marketing at Tadiran Telecom. "We are successful in various vertical markets including transportation, healthcare, energy infrastructure, finance, and others because our products are well designed, allowing maximum flexibility and enabling us to be very responsive to the market."
Tadiran's telephony solutions have already been deployed in other transportation projects in China, including Dalian International, Huhhot, Tianjin, Wuhan, Zhenzhou, Hainan Phoenix and Wuxi airports, the internal Metro Express in Beijing airport, and subway numbers 5 and 4, especially built for the Beijing Olympic Games.

VoIP Security Challenges

Keeping a VoIP network as secure as traditional phone systems involves a few unique challenges but these can be overcome by IT professionals, according to expert Gary Audin.
Adding internet telephony to the office network can exacerbate the security problems faced by the IT department as it creates another access point for hackers.
While professional VoIP providers will work to keep security levels high, companies who set up their own network are more at risk from eavesdroppers or denial of service attacks.
But to before VoIP implementation, companies should make sure their IT security team is prepared.
"The new responsibilities for VoIP security will require education, possibly some organisational adjustment and expanded job descriptions," writes Mr Audin for Computer Weekly.
There remain, however, fewer dangers in a VoIP network than a traditional computer network as the technology is comparatively young - although Mr Audin suggests this may change in the future as hackers develop viruses or password cracks.
So to prepare for the future and ensure the security of the network, Mr Audin suggests companies should check with their provider that a firewall is installed in front of the call server and in the VoIP gateway.
However, he cautioned that "the more barriers there are in the network and endpoints for security purposes, the more interference there will be with voice quality".

Global Crossing VoIP Service Expanded to Nine More Countries

Global Crossing, a leading global IP solutions provider, today announced it has once again broadened the scope and reach of its Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services for customers around the world by extending its Global Crossing VoIP Local Service(TM) to six more European countries and three in Latin America. The addition of Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Germany, Peru, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland brings to 20 the total number of countries worldwide where the service is offered.
The newly available VoIP Local Service offering complements the existing suite of VoIP Outbound and converged IP services in these markets. VoIP Local Service also is available in Denmark, Finland, France, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States. Global Crossing VoIP Outbound(TM) services are available from 29 countries around the world and provide the consistency customers require from global services.
"The UK is a critical growth market for Global Crossing. Customers are asking for increased functionality for local applications that fits seamlessly with our global footprint," said Anthony Christie, Global Crossing's managing director, UK and Europe. "As we extend our VoIP footprint deeper into the UK and continental Europe, we're delivering that functionality -- along with the security, reliability and network coverage of Global Crossing's high-quality, global IP network."
With its new emergency calling services in the UK, Global Crossing will provide call routing and associated information, including trace back and call identification, via 999 or 112 to emergency service operators, so they can correctly identify the caller's registered location to emergency services personnel.
"These latest enhancements to Global Crossing VoIP Local Services in the UK provide significant benefits to customers in terms of convenience, quality and feature-rich services," said Camille Mendler, vice president of enterprise research at Yankee Group. "Global Crossing continues to be in the forefront of innovation and voice quality with its suite of global VoIP services, as it expands its reach into key markets across the world to support multinational customers."
In addition, Global Crossing's standard Local Services offer in the UK now includes local number portability. This lets telephone subscribers retain their phone numbers when they switch local carriers, avoiding the cost and inconvenience associated with changing to a new number.
Global Crossing VoIP Local Service is an inbound local service that provides nationwide Direct Inward Dialing/Direct Dial Inward (DID/DDI) functionality through a single IP interconnection. The service lets customers originate traffic on the public switched telephone network (PSTN) in different countries. The traffic is then converted to VoIP on Global Crossing's network and then delivered to the customer's IP network. VoIP Local Service eliminates traditional time division multiplexing (TDM), private line and foreign exchange service fees by providing a single IP connection to serve multiple markets.
Global Crossing's global, fully meshed MPLS-based network ensures that VoIP calls are delivered with minimal latency, packet loss and jitter -- a consistent and predictable call quality not possible with voice services based on public Internet transport. Global Crossing's VoIP platform carried more than 30 billion minutes of use during 2006, positioning the company as a leader in global IP communications.

Skype appealed to FCC to stop Mobile Carriers from blocking its VoIP Application.

Skype appealed to FCC to stop Mobile Carriers from blocking its VoIP Application. Due to continued blogging of Skype`s peer-to-peer voip application by cellphone carriers in the USA, Skype has once again appealed to the FCC to reintroduce the well-know carterfone rules of 1968 to counter such monopolistic moves by mobile carriers that hinders subscribers' freedom.
In a case filed in the FCC, Skype has brought serious objections against Verizon Wireless and other big brands who decline their customers to download any kind of communication software application from other companies and tie them to their operators’ network.
Skype explains FCC that Carriers are using their considerable influence over handset design and usage to maintain control over and limit subscribers’ right to run software communications applications of their choosing.
It seems that mobile carriers in the USA are really afraid of increasing popularity of mobile voip, they believe it will cut down their revenue considerably and are therefore looking for ways to prevent their subscribers from having access to mobile voip applications. This is what Skype is fighting against and they are certainly not alone in this fight as many voip operators has given Skype their support.

Text2it VoIP Service let users transfer between landline and mobile

Text2it, a Canadian company is exploring the flexibility of voip telephony to launch a service that let users transfer calls seamlessly between a mobile and landlines. This service is still in the beta testing and the company believe it will hit it big among business voip users.
"Voice over IP is about more than lower rates, it's also about freedom and flexibility" said Costa Nikols, vice president of sales and marketing at Text2it.
"Our call transfer capability offers exactly that - users can initiate a Text2it call on one phone and transfer it to a different one at any time. Just press a couple of keys on your phone's dialpad and take that call out the door with you".
Aimed at business users who want to keep in contact while on the move, but not have to go through the annoyance of a break in the call when they reach the office, the capability extends Text2it's VoIP service that does not require a broadband connection or a special phone.
Instead, users can use any landline or mobile phone and dial calls by texting a Text2it gateway, which in turn sets up the call using VoIP for a fraction of the normal call cost – allowing users to make use of VoIP anywhere and without special equipment or software.

12Voip Launched with Free Unlimited Calls to 50 Countries.

Betamax has launched another voip application nicknamed 12Voip. It looks much like other betamax voip applications such as voipcheap, voipbuster etc. It can be downloaded free from 12voip.com and its very easy to install and use. Users of 12Voip can call worldwide at extremelly low rates. The major difference between 12voip and other betamax voip clients is that you have to pay now to make unlimited free calls though it cost just 10 euros( $13 )to make unlimited free calls to 50 countries for 3 months, which i consider a good deal when compared to other providers.
I have signed up and make free trial calls and i can report that the audio quality is quite good and the calls connect without any problem. Paying a fixed amount to make free unlimited calls to popular destinations seems to be the new besiness model of Betamax and i wont be suprised to see them extend this to other voip clients like voipbuster, voipcheap, internetcalls etc. Before now you only need to top up your credit to enjoy 300 minutes per week of free calls to those destinations.
This i believe is a better approach to offer voip service than keep changing the name of your voip clients in other to force users to pay another minimum credit to make free calls which is the method betamax adopted before now. Betamax rates are still comparativelly low and people will still use there service if they charge a fixed amount per month for free calls.

The foundations put in place over the last year by the new Pace management team, including enhanced customer focus, company structure, operating model and product execution, have delivered improved results in the second half of the financial year. Consequently, overall performance for the year ending 2nd June 2007 is expected to be slightly ahead of current market expectations.

In addition, Skype has expanded the list of destination countries to which the ‘half off SMS’ messages can be sent this time around.
Between June 4 and June 10, 2007, Skype users anywhere in the world who send SMS messages to recipients in the following 15 countries – Australia, Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Ireland, the Republic of Korea, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, the United Kingdom and the United States – will be charged half the usual rate. More information about Skype’s half price SMS promotion can be found at skype.com/campaigns/halfprice.
“We had such a great response from our users that we've included even more countries in the half-price SMS promotion this month,” said Stefan Öberg, VP & GM of telecoms, Skype. “As Skype’s community grows, users are beginning to take advantage of the full range of communications channels that are available via Skype. We are seeing similar usage patterns in how they take advantage of the ability to send SMS messages quickly and easily to friends, family and colleagues around the world from the comfort of their keyboards.”
More information about Skype SMS rates to all destinations can be found at skype.com/products/skypesms/rates.
Skype simplifies the way people keep in touch with one another. It is designed to give its more than 196 million registered users around the world free or very cheap ways to easily talk to or chat with their loved ones. In fact, Skype users can make free or very cheap voice calls, see one another via video calls and send text messages to anyone they know, no matter where they happen to be.

Attackers targets VoIP

The recent spate of malware attacks propagating throughout the user base of the Skype Internet calling system illustrates a broader trend toward cyber-criminals moving to take advantage of VOIP platforms as they become increasingly popular.
Security researchers tracking the latest pack of worm viruses to wriggle their way through the Skype community's chat system said that the threats are nearly identical to attacks that have plagued users of other publicly-available messaging applications for years. However, as Skype and other VOIP systems become even more widespread and greater numbers of businesses move to adopt the technologies, experts predict that cyber-criminals will ratchet-up the severity and diversity of the attacks they aim at users of the software.
In mid-May, London-based Skype -- which is owned by eBay -- launched a series of trials of new enterprise features that it hopes will encourage larger numbers of businesses to consider use of its publicly-available VOIP applications.
The potential to use such programs to infiltrate business networks and carry out attacks will drive malware code writers and other schemers to similarly increase their focus on VOIP platforms, researchers said.
On May 24, Chris Boyd, a researcher at FaceTime Communications -- which established a partnership to provide security applications to Skype in Feb. 2007 -- noticed a new variant of the so-called Skype worm that has been spreading through the VOIP client's messaging system for the last several months.
Unlike previous versions of the threat that merely passed themselves along to other Skype users via their contact lists, the new variant will also "jump" to other more established networks, including the ICQ and MSN messenger platforms.
The development illustrates not only that attacks aimed at users of VOIP networks are escalating and becoming more sophisticated, but also that they are being pulled into use by the smartest and most aggressive cyber-criminals looking for new revenue streams, Boyd said.
"There are a lot of businesses picking up Skype in the workplace, and it's a good bet that if they have Skype on there, they have other IM clients. The attackers are really trying to hit as many people as possible in a random manner, but this is the first instance we've seen of an attempt to get a foot in the door of other networks using Skype," Boyd said.
While the attack merely passes itself along to contacts listed in the messaging accounts of affected users, versus dropping malware onto their computers, it does attempt to lure people into clicking on links that point to a range of virus-infecting Web sites.
Boyd said that several of the involved URLs have been used in previous attacks on Skype users, including a handful of sites registered through Chinese hosting companies.
The researcher believes that the endgame of the hackers behind the threat is to steal valuable data from infected users and pass it back to themselves over Skype's encrypted messaging system. Boyd said that there is also growing evidence of attackers building proof-of-concept botnet threats aimed specifically at Skype users.
"Things can potentially get passed out of an organization using Skype because the messaging communications are encrypted and hard to fiddle with. That could be one of the angles," Boyd said. "It's just interesting that the attacks we saw for several months have been so consistent, and now there's this significant change in targeting different networks. I think we'll see more editions in the coming weeks and a substantial attack on Skype users at some point."
In late March 2007, researchers at F-Secure first unearthed a Skype worm variant that attempted to trick users into visiting a Web site that downloaded a malware program which was designed to communicate to hackers over a Yahoo mail server to confirm its infection and load additional programs onto affected PCs.
Variants of the attack, which subsequently tried to infect users with keystroke logging software and other data-thieving programs, have continued to appear since that time.
Tony Magellanez, a systems engineer at Helsinki, Finland-based F-Secure, said that such a move by hackers to port their IM-based threats to VOIP software should come as no surprise.
"Chat has obviously been around forever, and the ability to share information via these tools has opened it up to the types of attacks we're seeing," Magellanez said. "The attacks aren't being made against any vulnerability in the software but instead against the social aspects of its use that make it an attractive target."
The researcher said, in fact, that the Skype application in particular has exhibited a small number of vulnerabilities and proven fairly resistant to malware threats, a performance he attributes to significant work on the part of the company to engineer the system with security in mind.
Other researchers echoed that sentiment but pointed out that most large businesses will still likely adopt VOIP tools designed specifically for the enterprise and avoid publicly-available programs like Skype out of fear for potential attacks.
"At this point, we're really just talking about VOIP as a transport vector for attacks as is the case with the Skype worm attacks, which is predictable when you consider other IM-based threats," said Chris Hoff, chief technology officer at Crossbeam Systems. "Like anything else, when VOIP becomes a more legitimate pathway for attackers to go after monetary systems, they will come after it, but it also seems like businesses are taking a more pragmatic approach to adopting VOIP when it comes to security."
For instance, Hoff said most companies are running their VOIP systems on standalone networks to make it harder for hackers to access the programs and protect availability of their calling capabilities. Such planning should make a big difference as more dangerous VOIP threats are created, he said.
Tom Cross, a researcher with the X-Force team at IBM's ISS division, agreed that Skype is in some sense becoming a victim of its own success with the recent emergence of more worms. In addition to a rapidly increasing number of users, the researcher also attributed greater e-mail and IM security awareness among customers as a reason for the uptick in activity.
"From a technical standpoint, these worms don't really have anything to do with VOIP, it's being targeted just as any other popular communications tool will be," Cross said. "Hackers are also moving to different technologies to perform their attacks because we've gotten better at detecting them on other platforms; spam and e-mail don't work as well for the attackers anymore, so VOIP offers a new opportunity where end-users may not be expecting this type of threat, yet."

New VoIP service for SMBs launched by Optus

Optus has launched a new voice over IP solution specifically targeted at SMBs. Optus voip servise will be in two formats namely ipPhone Premier and ipPhone Express, these two will be made available to their business DSL customers.
Both services come bundled with Optus's Soft Phone application, however, it currently doesn't run on Windows Vista or Mac OS, according to Optus.
The services bundle together a range of features including call routing, call transfer, calling logs, line hunt, Find Me and Follow Me service and voicemail.
ipPhone Premier is designed for users with two to six lines, and will set businesses back AU$19.95 per line. Premier is more for businesses who want to replace their existing fixed line service.
However, ipPhone Express is primarily for businesses who want to keep their fixed-line option but add additional VoIP capabilities. The service enables users to add a single additional phone-line for AU$12 per month. Both services charge a flat rate of 12 cents for local and national calls.
"Until now SMB customers have had to accept a consumer style voice product when implementing VoIP in their business. Optus can now offer a fully functioning VoIP solution that doesn’t compromise the call quality SMB customers get with their traditional fixed service," Paul Kitchin, Optus's SMB managing director said in a statement.
Meanwhile a headset may be required to make and receive calls, which Optus does not supply. Additionally, Optus said that "calls made using ipPhone Express service count towards your broadband data usage allowance", however, this is not the case for the ipPhone Premier service.
Adoption of voip in the australian market has been rising steadly and Optus want to catch in on this.

Apple reveal the release date for iPhone

Apple have started running TV commercials that states that the much anticipated iphone will be realeased on June 29 in the U.S. They will be releasing two models of the much expected apple phone.
The much-talked-about iPhone combines the features of an iPod music and video player with those of a cellular telephone and will be available through AT&T Wireless Services Inc.
AT&T, which acquired Cingular Wireless, hasn't yet announced details of how it will sell the phones although long lines outside outlets are almost assured if the phone will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
Two models will be available. One with 4GB of memory will cost $499 and a version with double the memory will cost $599, the companies said previously.
Announcement of the launch date ends a five-month guessing game that began on Jan. 10 when Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone during his keynote speech at the MacWorld Expo in San Francisco.
During the keynote Jobs touted the iPhone as "revolutionary" and demonstrated its features to an enthralled audience. Chief among them is Multi-Touch, a touchscreen display system that can differentiate and react to simultaneous touches from two fingers. Typically touchpanels cannot handle input at more than one point on the screen.
In addition to the 3.5-inch display, the phone will feature a 2-megapixel camera, headset and audio jacks, and an iPod dock. The first iPhone model will be quad-band GSM (global system for mobile communications), meaning it should work in almost every major country in the world. Exceptions to this will be Japan and South Korea, where GSM is not used. Data transmission will be supported by Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and EDGE.
Behind the iPhone's slick user interface is Apple's Mac OSX operating system. Apple had previously said that third-party developers wouldn't be able to write applications and load them onto the phone, but speaking last week Jobs said Apple is working on a way to allow developers access to the phone.
All the three TV commercials currently running has also been posted on the Apple website.

Federal Appeals Court Ruled that VoIP Providers Must Pay USF Fees.

A US federal appeals court ruled on friday evening that voip providers must pay the Universal Services Fund (USF).This definitely will not be good news fro VoIP users as it may result in higher rates as the cost will be passed on to the consumers by the providers. The USF has been paid into by local , long-distance and wireless services providers for a long time now and the court believes that voip providers that interconnect with public switched telephone network should also contribute to the fund.
The decision is limited to VoIP providers that interconnect with the public switched telephone network (PSTN). The USF subsidizes phone service in under-served and rural areas. Through the E-rate fund, the USF also subsidizes Internet connections in schools and libraries.
After the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) ruled last year VoIP providers were obligated to pay USF fees, Vonage challenged the decision. The Holmdel, N.J.-based company claimed the FCC exceeded its authority in the ruling, in addition to overestimating how much VoIP providers should pay.
"We conclude that the commission has statutory authority to require VoIP providers to make USF contributions," the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia wrote in its opinion.
As for the amount VoIP providers must pay, Vonage challenged the formula used by the FCC. Traditional telephone companies pay 11.7 percent of their long distance revenue into the fund. But since Internet calls can't be broken into local and long distance categories, the FCC set a "safe harbor" estimate of 64.9 percent for VoIP providers.
The FCC analogized the VoIP safe harbor with wireless companies, which pay 37.1 percent of their long distance revenues into the USF.
"Because VoIP's functionality and customer profile differ from those of other technologies, reasoning by analogy in this way invites some inevitable imprecision," the court ruled. "We agree with Vonage that this difference in capabilities renders the VoIP/wireline toll service analogy imperfect. Perfection, however, is not what the law requires."
Brooke Schulz, senior vice president for corporate communications at Vonage, insisted in a statement that Vonage supports expanding USF contribution to VoIP carriers. "Our case simply challenged the funding methodology, not the underlying concept of USF," Schulz said.
Last year, Medley Global Advisors estimated the FCC decision would add approximately $1.30 a month to each VoIP subscriber's bill.
"I am pleased that the court has affirmed the commission's action, which ensures that USF contribution obligations are administered in a competitively and technologically neutral manner on all phone providers, including interconnected Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) providers," FCC Chairman Kevin Martin said in a statement.

Deutsche Telekom invest in web-activated telephony provider JaJah

Deutsche Telekom through its T-Online Venture Fund has invested in Jajah but the actual stake in the company was not disclosed. This is coming just weeks after the microprocessor giant Intel invested close to $20 million dollars in Jajah. In recent months web activated services provider by companies such as Jajah and Retel have gained a great deal of attention and telcos / investors are taking note.
This is an early example of a traditional telco taking a stake in an Internet player and means that DT can start to use JAJAH's communications features embedded in new web-based applications. It will certainly be interesting to see what emerges from DT's new involvement. But we think there may be secondary reasons why DT is pursuing this line.
DT through T-Com was relatively late launching its own VoIP offering (March 2005) and only introduced flat-rate pricing in November 2005, following its competitors in the German market. We believe it has struggled in relative terms since then and that other players such as Skype and its other main broadband competitors are more strongly positioned in VOIP overall. DT, in common with all other major fixed-line telcos, is feeling the pain of fixed-line loss and call revenue loss to VoIP as well as other factors such as fixed-mobile substitution (FMS). Since calls made with JAJAH rely on traditional fixed and mobile services, those calls made to T-Com and T-Mobile numbers using JAJAH can still benefit DT through call origination and termination revenues. Promoting JAJAH will therefore have an indirect benefit for the DT Group and will help to defend against the march of other low-cost players. Playing the numbers game and promoting alternatives such as JAJAH, while learning more about their potential in a converging world is a good move.
VoIP has come to stay and for telcos its now a case of if you can't beat them you join them.
