Fringland Launches First Public Mobile VoIP for iPhone

Unveiling what it calls the world's foremost mobile VoIP application, Fringland Ltd stated that Apple iPhone can now be used for VoIP through mobile WiFi application.

Fringsters (subscribers using Fring application) can now talk, chat, interact and participate in online social communities with other users with their Apple iPhone WiFi connection through this new application.

The application was however not the effort of Fringland alone but developed in conjuction with Holon Institute of Technology Academics research labs in Israel. The product, which would be launched later this year, is still not yet available in commercial quantities and the ones out now are just pre-release version which they hope will enable them improve and do some necessary adjustments as may arise and at the same time  allowing potential users to have what they called "The Fring Experience".

Live instant message chat with online contacts, free and low cost mobile cell phone calls over WiFi and discovering the freedom of being able to take their Fring contacts and buddies from other favorite communities on their iPhones are among the great features Apple iPhone users are going to enjoy using this product.

It should be recalled that Fring was first launched in February 2007 and actively allows users to knowingly communicate with each other and with contacts from Skype, MSN, Google Talk, ICQ, Twitter, Yahoo and AOL AIM.

With great success recorded  since early this year as regards the number of subsribers on their network to the tune of over 100,000 new users every month and across over 280 countries through out the globe,it is expected that many mobile phone users will be attracte to this new appllication.

Low Cost International Calls for MO-Call iPhone Users

Morodo Limited has launched a new low cost international call rate for Apple iPhone Users and this technology uses an existing Web-based "Virtual Mobile Network".
With this new service, subscribers on MO-Call plan would be able to make their calls to other phone numbers through the Safari browser and at a cheaper rate too. For example, a call originating from a US mobile phone to a mobile phone user in Japan will cost $0.23 per minute, while the same calls through Verizon Wireless cost phone owners $1.62 per minute.
Another interesting improvement is that, Morodo has been able to come up with a solution that eliminates international roaming charges for mobile phone users while placing any international calls and this is achieved by redirecting each international call through the MO-Call network.
MO-call has been designed in such a way that it can function on multiple mobile OS platforms, this implies that MO-Call can be used on over 800 different mobile phones available in the market. The company is however using this as its debut, its main focus is targted at becoming a global VoIP service operator.

Fringland Announces World's First Mobile VoIP Application

Crowning itself the first true mobile VoIP solution for Apple's dream phone,Fringland Ltd claimed that it has launched the world's first mobile VoIP application to be made publicly available for the Apple iPhone.

With this new application, users of iPhone can talk, chat and interact with other Fring users, known as Fringsters, and participate in online social communities by using their Apple iPhone WiFi connection. It enables users to place VoIP calls in place of their plan minutes, giving people a cheap international calling alternative to their carrier's expensive per-minute charges.

This special pre-release version of fring has been developed in conjunction with the Holon Institute of Technology academic research labs in Isreal. According to Fring," the pre-release version in response to iPhone users urging us to let them join the growing community of fringsters in over 180 countries worldwide. During the R&D period, we'll be listening to feedback, so we can fine tune the final version and create a truly kicking user experience for iPhone users."
The one caveat (besides the need for a "jailbroken" handset) is that it requires the thick river of data only available over Wi-Fi, which means you won't be able to make or receive VoIP calls without being in range of a hotspot.

Besides VoIP, the app excels in instant messaging. You can live text chat with buddies on MSN Live Messenger, ICQ, Google Talk, AIM, Yahoo, as well as post and read messages to and from Twitter. Fring also lets you do voice chat with MSN, Google Talk, and ICQ.

To instigate a call, you simply have to hit a large green call button after hitting a buddy's name on the Fring contact list (see photo below). There's no minute counter, hold button, or anything else you might be used to with a regular phone--it's just a quick and dirty call that with a good connection sounds downright decent.

MO-Call works by means of a software plug-in that is installed on a mobile phone using the Safari browser and each international call is redirected through the MO-Call network, eliminating international roaming charges for mobile phone users. GLDS and SinglePipe Partner to Offer Flow-Through Billing

Announcing its new billing system at the NSTA's The Cable Show, SinglePipe Communications and Great Lakes Data Systems, Inc. (GLDS) said that they have integrated flow-through billing and provisioned for commercial and residential VoIP services. The companies have deployed the new integrated solution for CMA Communications in Dallas.
It is claimed that SinglePipe is one of the first telephony services providers to integrate with GLDS's Service Provisioning Gateway for Voice (SPG) interfaces. By leveraging the integration with the GLDS gateway (SPG), operators are able to control SinglePipe Digital Voice services directly from GLDS's WinCable billing system.
The integration eliminates the need for multiple disparate systems and operators are able to manage SinglePipe delivered services without additional mediation or provisioning layers. CMA Communications will also gain from direct provisioning from the billing system as they will now be able to manage triple-play service delivery more efficiently and minimize revenue loss.
The companies explain that GLDS WinVoIP module allows the import, management and aggregation of pre-rated, pre-taxed call detail records for consolidated multi-service billing. SinglePipe originates, terminates and manages each phone call over its own network. This certified, facilities-based Competitive Local Exchange Carrier (CLEC) then transmits a rated call detail records to GLDS WinCable billing system. This system then aggregates that data (with video and data billing information) into a single, consolidated triple-play bill.
GLDS VP of Operations, Garrick Russell finds SinglePipe easy to work with, and noted that the integration process went very smoothly. He explained that provisioning and billing from the same system just makes sense as the resulting solution will mean lower labor costs, faster service activation, and fewer mistakes.
SinglePipe COO Jeff Carr said in a statement that providing an integrated billing and provisioning platform through their partnership with GLDS is a key component of their overall value proposition. He noted that they'll be able to deliver faster, more seamless service launches for their cable operator clients, more efficient ongoing Digital Voice service delivery, and more satisfying experiences for end-users.
SinglePipe's Digital Voice Solutions boast a range of packages for both residential customers and for small to medium-sized businesses. According to SinglePipe, all SinglePipe Digital Voice offerings include all of the advanced calling and phone control features customers want, as well as regulatory compliance, FCC -compliant 911, local number portability, complete back office integration, and Tier 2/3 support.

ShoreTel Unveils New Application for its Unified Communications

Announcing the expansion of its unified communications portfolio with new system software, desktop user interface software and several new voice switches, ShoreTel has given its customers another reason while they should stay connected to their network.

The new application, ShoreTel 8 has enabled the company to add a new high-end desktop client, ShoreWare Professional and this is targeted at those power users' customers.

ShoreWare Professional Call Manager is an optional full unified communications client that incorporates an integrated soft phone and videoconferencing capabilities. It can also act as a client for a back-end presence server, such as Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2005, and enables users to control calling features such as which phone their calls should be routed to.

With Professional Call Manager, users can make point-to-point videocalls within the enterprise.

"It's a great opportunity for our channel partners to get into video without becoming video engineers," said Jeff Ridley, director of application product management for ShoreTel, Sunnyvale , Calif. "It won't handle all [videoconferencing] needs, but it supplements voice communications."

ShoreTel also updated ShoreWare Call Manager, the more basic desktop client that is included with its user license, adding a new tabbed user interface designed to speed access voicemail, call history, directories and speed dial.

The vendor also added built-in support for SIP endpoints, a move one solution provider said is key for ShoreTel and its customers. The vendor previously supported SIP trunking.

Customers want to be able to use third-party phones such as Polycom IP conference phones or Wi-Fi phones, and now ShoreTel 8 allows that, said Terry Siemens, client executive at Peak Uptime, a solution provider in Tulsa , Okla.

The addition of support for SIP handsets will open up new customers for Peak Uptime, he said. In the past, some customers have chosen not to go with ShoreTel because it lacked SIP phone support, Siemens said. "If we had ShoreTel 8 two years ago, there were opportunities that we would have won."

ShoreTel has also added new voice switches, including the ShoreGear 30 for branch locations with up to 10 users, and the ShoreGear 24A for high-density analog deployments.

The new products are available now in the U.S. Licenses for ShoreWare Personal Call Manager are $80, a SIP Device License is $30, the ShoreGear 30 is priced at $1,595 and the ShoreGear 24A is priced at $2,995.

360Networks Expands VoIP Coverage Areas

Having successfully brought wholesale VoIP services to many small markets in the Western states, 360Networks is now taking a step further by focusing on more major cities where it can readily offer the service.

Already, it has launched its service in Los Angeles and San Diego this week and debuting its wholesale VoIP service in California with 238 new rate centers in two local access transport areas [LATAs], the carrier is pushing wholesale VoIP into Dallas and Chicago this year, adding to cities such as Denver and Seattle.

The company sells wholesale carriers and resellers of termination traffic. Its competitors include Level 3 Communications, Paetec, Global Crossing and, increasingly in California, Pac-West Telecomm.

After L.A. and San Diego, 360 will next target San Francisco and Sacramento, followed by smaller markets throughout the Golden State.

Commenting on their success of reaching California, Nick Reifschneider who is the product manager for VoIP business stated that "We've been wanting to do California for quite a while, there's just a lot of process work that has to take place, lighting up with AT&T. "

The company has enjoyed great expansion since the time when it began the sale of wholesale VoIP in the fall of 2006, initially spreading throughout Qwest Communications territory. But it has since expanded outside that footprint, inking local interconnect agreements with Verizon Communications, Embarq, CenturyTel and, most recently, AT&T.

Late last year, the company deployed optical equipment from Infinera in order to light its own network between Chicago and Denver -- a route in which 360 previously leased capacity from others. That move not only gave the carrier plenty of capacity on that route, it also allowed 360 to launch wholesale VoIP service in Iowa and Nebraska.

360 wants to launch service in Chicago before the end of this year, but that process is slowed by the fact that the city has penned its own requirements for emergency 911 VoIP service. (360 works with Entrado for e911.). And the company hopes to launch service in Dallas in June

However, as its network expands to east Chicago, 360 reveals that it has no plan to expands its network into the eastern US for the sole reason that it will cost 360 to acquire off-network facilities which the company is not prepared to do at the moment.

Botswana and Cape Verde Move to Legalize VoIP Services

With the recent development in Botswana and Cape Verde, these two nations are among the few in Africa to legalize VoIP services. The Cape Verde agency in charge of communication, Agencia Nacional de Communicacoes of Cape has announced its intention to legalize VoIP in the country.

Arrangements have been concluded to offer license to international VoIP service providers offering cheap calling and offer two classes of numbering- fixed and mobile. It has already licensed a Triple Play operator, European-backed Cabo Corn, which will take advantage of the change in regulation to offer IP-TV, internet and voice services. The new operators will need a simple authorization from ANAC to start offering service. PC to PC and PC to phone calling will be entirely without any form of regulation. ANAC is also setting the pace in the wireless area as next month it will start a public consultation on Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) where it wants to split the spectrum into 4-5 blocks and then have a public tender based on the highest bidders. It believes this will be the most transparent way of dealing with increased demand for Wi-MAX related spectrum. ANAC is also considering a 3rd licence with 3G as part of the licence package. The islands were promoted to the middle-income country group in January this year and increased tourist trade is drawing operator interest.

Similarly, the Botswana Telecommunications Authority (BTA) has approved the license of two international VoIP service providers to operate in the country. The operators are BBI and OPQ Net, both offering international calling cards but have not yet made much impact on the market. Perhaps it's no coincidence that BTA is also addressing Wi-MAX spectrum in two ranges 3.5-3.6 and 1785-1805 Ghz.

However, it will be taking a slightly different approach to ANAC and will be offering spectrum at fixed prices on the basis of the business case presented.

Experts Worries about VoIP Fraud

As the VoIP services gain more popularity in terms of usage and therefore financial returns, there have been several speculations that this might cause the industry to be the target of fraudsters. Experts worries that this might bring a new form of cyber crime yet unknown to several innocent users.

To this effect, Newport Networks has recently published their findings which include the fact that cyber criminals are already targeting people using internet phone services. The research also revealed that usernames and passwords from VoIP account are selling more than stolen credit cards on the internet. Credit cards details are being sold for £6 each, while VoIP account details goes for about £9.

Username and password are the two key information needed to commit this crime and once someone get hold of these two info, they can use the telephone service for free at the expense of their victims.

While speaking on the crime on the BBC, the vice president of products at Newport Networks, Dave Gladwin said that "it still at an embryonic stage but as voice adoption increases it becomes more of a problem and needs addressing"

In addition, there is also the problems of eavesdropping on phone calls and this has made the VoIP users more vulnerable.

He reveals that 90% of carriers don't offer a secure VoIP service [which doesn't include Skype] and it would cost around £2/£3 per subscriber to bump security levels up.

Recent Survey Reveals Newport Networks Face Service Quality Challenges

At a recent  networking software event, SofNet,

Newport conducted a survey to sample what users associated with the telecoms industry actually think and know about VoIP. Although the sample was just a few dozen delegates , the company was able to know what exactly people think about their service.

The biggest obstacle that VoIP services face, according to the poll, is  Quality of Service and  this beat security concerns into second place with worries over how to charge and bill in a lowly third place. In a way, this is no real surprise as VoIP services still are in the process of shedding the cheap and unreliable image (think how Skoda had to re-invent itself). They are worried that rates of those transitioning to VoIP services may slow dramatically if quality and security issues are not dealt with soon.

Second on the list was security, a surprising 60 percent of delegates believed that VoIP is 'reasonably secure' with 1 in 10 considering it to be secure with just 30 percent believing it to be insecure. This figures are interesting considering that the majority of SIP based VoIP services do not use encryption on signalling or media. Therefore, any reasonably well informed hacker can 'sniff' VoIP credentials from unsecured wireless networks.

Another question asked related to security was who should be responsible for security.

A significant 60 percent of delegates surveyed believe that service providers should be responsible for security, followed by 35 per cent feeling that both the service provider and subscriber should be responsible.

When asked what were the biggest perceived threats to VoIP services, nearly half of delegates named lack of quality (again), followed by identity theft (28 per cent), lack of interconnect between services (20 per cent), and denial of service attacks (9 per cent).

Drawing a conclusion, VP of Product Marketing at Newport Networks, Dave Gladwin, said that

it is clear that service providers need to take action to address fundamental issues such as reliable quality of service and effective security to ensure they continue to retain or increase their market share. But also consumers need to be more aware of the security implications of using VoIP services, particularly when on the road where they are most useful. VoIP hacking may be in its infancy at present but you can be sure that hackers are taking the opportunity to "case the joint".  As consumers we can do our bit by securing our home WiFi, but ultimately it will come down to the service providers to offer a secure service.

Jangl may Opt out of VoIP Industry

From all indications, the Silicon Valley Internet phone company that also offers VoIP services via widgets on the web-Jangl will soon opt out of VoIP services by selling off its investments in the industry.

This was confirmed by the company spokesman, Tim Johnson who said that the company is looking to be sold, and that the company has received a number of offers.

Already, some of the staff have been applying for other jobs not wanting to be caught stranded by this recent development.

The company has tried all kinds of tactics to find traction in the cut-throat world of free calls. It started by issuing you a disposable number, so that you could give out numbers to dates, for example, and avoid giving them your real number. It then moved to more fully embrace placing widgets on web sites, making it easy for you to make free calls over the Web. The company has continued to work on new initiatives, including a pre-roll ad platform for VoIP calls most recently.

Johnson further said that Jangl executives last fall directed by the company's board "to pursue acquisition opportunities in lieu of venture funding."

This suggests the Jangl's backers, which have pumped $9 million into the company beginning three years ago, saw the VoIP field as too competitive and too risky to make further investments.

On the other hand, the company had enough money to honor its commitments to partners for quite some time. It will continue to do that.

Officials Warns Against Use of VoIP for Emergency Calls

Even though his parents made an emergency call to rescue the life of their dying baby, it could not save the life of eighteen-month old Elijah who died before the emergency  officials could make it to their home.

His parents had earlier called 911 using a VoIP phone and this has prompted the officials to immediately dispatched their ambulance to the caller's residence but unfortunately the officials  went to the caller's former address and before anything could be done poor Luck Elijah passed on.

This occurrence was attributed to the use of VoIP phone by the parents of the boy. According to Terry Owen, the director of technology services with the City of Edmonton's community services branch "Cell phones work better than "nomadic" connections -- like those used by VoIP phone providers Comwave and Vonage -- because emergency responders get a phone number and a location of the nearest cell phone tower, but are still more limited than landlines"

While commenting on the reasons emergency callers should avoid the use of VoIP to route any urgent call,

Devon Card, branch manager of operational services for the City of Edmonton, said enhanced 911 -- available through fixed VoIP systems, like those offered by Shaw -- puts you through to an emergency communication centre in the same city as the call, and automatically provides the address and telephone number if the call is disconnected or the caller cannot speak. In his words he said "You don't want to find out about those limitations during an emergency. Consumers need to be asking questions so they have a full understanding of their service."

However, Paul Godin, a spokesperson for the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, said the CRTC is working on enhancing the service. The CRTC ruled in 2005 that phone providers must inform customers of limitations yearly.

On the other hand, the VoIP companies have vowed to enlighten users more on how they can effectively make use of the service for such purpose. Comwave representative Allison George said that following the incident in Calgary, the company will now inform customers of limitations with 911 twice a year by e-mail, instead of just annually.

Also, George said Comwave customers do not have the option of enhanced 911, and customers are asked to confirm location when on the phone with emergency services personnel. George said Comwave phones will not turn on until customers acknowledge limitations with 911.
